Don't worry, the way things are going with people claiming back excessive bank charges it won't be long before all the UK banks implement small charges for every little thing like they do in most other countries.

They'll get the money bank one way or another :D

Yeah, I'd rather the numpties that go overdrawn subsidise my free bank account so I don't have to pay for it... ;)

Agreed.

It was on the news today that it's almost certain the banks will soon start charging for current accounts. I will soon be paying because some people don't like to be charged when they go overdrawn. Not happy!

I guess I'll need to cut down the number of current accounts I have if it does happen.

some people have a tight budget all are not as lucky as you example i went 11 quid over my o/d they returned 2 standing orders and charged me 70 quid .as a result im claming them back.i would mind paying a resonable charge say a fiver but 70 quid thats effing robbery.:(

I'm not lucky. People who win the lottery are lucky. I work hard and I get paid for it,

Regardless of what I earn now, I earned very little when I started work. I still didn't go overdrawn - it's called budgeting. You avoid spending more than you have.

Seems some of you dont know what your talking about (whats new?).

Banks can charge between 50 and £500 usually just to set an overdraft up for a business. This is a FINE, as the real cost is about £6 in work. This is something the bank have introduced in recent years, "stealing from people". I know onw guy who NEVER goes over his limit and the bank still take over a grand a year off him in "silly" fee's.

If you think that the bank are playing fair, then your the bigger mug. Free banking goes back centurys, and the current charges props nobodys free banking up. They have took £10K of lodgement charges off me in the last 6 years (real cost to them maybe £70), and thats just for me putting money in, wake up and smell the roses. You guys either dont have business accounts or dont read your statements.

Actually, I fully understand what I'm talking about.

I am well aware that the banks charges are higher than their admin costs, and I'm well aware that this is why people can claim the charges back.

Bottom line is : they don't charge ME so I don't really care - and I don't particularly want a solution that does cost ME money.

Business bank charges can be astronomical, but that's a whole different ball game to personal accounts.

We have free banking here and have had for a while thanks to some keen negotiating by the MD and a mistake they made once.

The simple fact is if they reduce a charge here, they'll increase it there.

Exactly.

It's not a case of what's fair and unfair, if they have to pay out millions then they will find a way to get it back one way or another.

Some people get stiffed with charges through unfortunate circumstances or having a business account, and some people are just plain stupid when it comes to managing money. Whatever the reason for claiming back the charges, no doubt everyone will end up paying.

How can you complain about that, its just a service the bank offers like any other service and your paying for it. If your paying too much find another business banking account elsewhere, some banks do free business banking for life.

I feel for anyone who goes overdrawn for not having enough money to put food on the table, but this is very rarely the case. They buy things they don't need and get penalised for it, maybe a hefty bank fine but surely they should learn for the next month rather than pay £100's of charges every month to the banks which could be avoided. If you give everyone overdrafts then they wouldn't use them as a back up they'd use them as their own money and still go overdrawn.

Soon it will be the norm to pay for having a bank account, it will probably be like £10 a month, in many countries this is standard. I think in France you have to pay €115 to open an account.

I pay a monthly fee for my current account, and I think it is money well spent for the benefits I get out of it.

There was a time when I used to go overdrawn, get charged, blah blah blah. Then I realised it was my own doing and sorted my life out. It's called taking responsibility for your actions.

What do you get out of it? I know my bank does accounts where I can pay (privilege or something like that) and it includes discounts on loan rates, travel insurance etc.

Travel insurance, and AA cover (roadside and homestart). There's more, but that's enough to make it worth it.

I should look into my bank's one again. When they contacted me before it was never worth it - but I spend over £100 for the RAC cover, plus I do have travel insurance these days. Paying for my account might actually work out cheaper.
