Leeky
Hi guys n gals I got a 100% standard uk mk4 tt auto. Havent had it for long and want to make sure its running in tip top condition without modifying it. I've just changed the old factory platinum plugs for Blitz Iridiums and am looking to change the crappy paper toyota air filter for a nice performance panel filter. I've been looking at the Blitz, Apexi and HKS filters. I used to have a HKS Superflow Induction kit in my ST205 Celica GT4 and i liked it a lot as it was very unrestrictive and allowed the engine to breath nicely. I hear the HKS Panel Filter is exactly the same material which makes it sound good to me on top of the fact its the cheapest out of the three i've mentioned. Althought i have one worry as my hks kit wasnt fantastic at filtering and i found loads of black crap forming inside the pipe Anyway can anyone recommend a good panel filter or advise on which of these three i should get? Cheers:D
michael
What do you want the filter to be good at? Filtration? Flow? Making noises? The "crappy paper toyota" one is more than capable for most uses, it's well made, filters most of the crap (more than other non-OEM) and allows sufficient airflow, anything else is a compromise. HKS filters are dire IMO, my own experience of them mirrored that of a lot of other people, filtration is poor but flow is good, personally I'm not keen on gravel making it's way into my engine so I opted for the K&N panel - reviews show it to filter better than the others, flow plenty and it's washable so you save money
Leeky
I can hear what your saying but im not a huge k&n fan. Im against buying stuff that is produced mostly for the "max power" generation of saxos and novas etc. Im big on my Jap makes. I hear the Apexi filter is actually the best for filtering and airflow but i dont know anyone who has one to get an opinion from:(
Syed Shah
Stock is best on the intake side. Concentrate on the exhaust side first, lots of gains to be had with cat removal and exhaust change.
Leeky
Stock airfilter is the best? What the paper one? Ok, well that does seem the cheapest option. Thanks for the advice but im trying to keep the car 100% standard as i dont want to hit my insurance premium also completely standard uk supras are almost extinct. Syed Shah
Yes the stock paper one. How about removing just the cats? It will look stock, just a little faster
Leeky
Well im quite happy with the stock 326bhp to tell you the truth. Its just the usual disposables like sparks, filters etc that i want to make sure i have the best ones going. Did loads of mods on my GT4 like exhaust, ecu etc. Then came to sell it and lost it all. If i burn any more holes in my wallet my coins will start falling out
Syed Shah
Ahh, I see. In that case give yourself some peace of mind and get ALL fluids and belts done, a proper service. Will work wonders. Also get the calipers refurbed at the same time etc etc. Will keep it in brilliant condition for years to come.
Leeky
Great stuff! Its going in soon for a Service at Toyota and a cambelt change. So i guess i'll get them to do the other belts while they are at it. Anything else? They check the transmission and brake fluid on a service anyway dont they? What do you mean by caliper refurbish? Just a clean up?
Syed Shah
Yes, get the serpentine belt done with the cambelt. They should check the other fluids at the same time. Best to get the diff and gearbox fluids done at the same time anyway. The caliper refurb is a kit sold by Toyota, most will need it now as they are quite old and will be past their best. Do a search on here and you should find some service info on what is checked/changed at service intervals.
Leeky
Funnilly enough i got a weird clonking noise from the drivers front caliper on braking sometimes so it could well be that the calipers need a refurb. I'll make sure i get all these things checked on the service. Cheers dude:D
Ian C
That may well be your subframe bolts - get those suckers tightened up too. I bet it clonks when reversing under full lock? And check your intercooler too. A lot are apparently falling apart now, Chris Wilson does a somewhat uprated drop-in replacement that's half the price of a new Toyota one. -Ian

I'll mention the intercoolers to the garage when it goes in and see what they think, also i'll get them to check everything over in general.
