hogmaw
Oh I bet that hurt!!! Quick question - why is it that the USA with all its resources and technology still relies on time consuming, ridiculous and primitive roadside tests like 'walk in a straight line' and 'put your finger on your nose' when testing for DUI when they could just use a BREATHALYSER and 10 seconds later it's all sorted?! Pot
Because it's a measure of how pissed you are, and not how much drink you've got in you?... Checking how your ability is impaired, instead of a paperwork limit... Chances are (Obviously not that dude), many people under our limit fail that test... s3upra
Judging by some drivers i see-i think they would fail even if they were stone cold sober.

So in the US if I drank a few pints and could do all those tests no problem, which I and many other people probably could, then even if I am technically 'over the limit', I'd get away scott free? Dunno how Americans can get pissed anyway my piss is more alcoholic than their beer

Pot
If their tests are designed to measure someone's capability and reactions, which I'm guessing they must be, then yes... You're comparing being over the limit to being able to operate a car... My point is that here we have a set limit, fixed for everyone... But alcohol affects everyone in different ways (I'm opening a can of worms here aren't I), so an actual measure of ability could be a better way, someone could have 1/2 a pint, and not be able to drive, someone could have a few, and be at exactly the same level... I'm not saying it to condone drink driving, I've personally been convicted of it just over a year ago, and I don't support it at all... hogmaw
So in the UK we have a set limit of alcohol in the blood for everyone regardless of how much it affects their ability to drive. Just like no matter how good or how bad a driver we are, we ALL have to adhere to the 70mph limit on the motorway. In the US they have the speed limit thing too which is much more rigorously enforced than our speed limit, but their level for alcohol tolerance seems to be discretionary? Pot
True, although it's a bit hard to set different speed limits for different cars, and people of different experiences, as everyone would be getting pulled over all of the time for a 'spot check'... At least when they pull someone over for whatever 'dodgy driving' has happened, they have some tests to show your abilities behind the wheel... Mike_Mac
There's a few good issues here. The idea of spot checking for co-ordination and physical capability to drive is a really good point. I understand the point Pot makes about drink driving and it does make sense. The thing I'm thinking about is the average driver you see weaving around, indicating the wrong way and not checking before pulling out at junctions. I'll bet that if given a check while stone cold sober many would fail a basic test, the majority being elderly. End result - safer roads if they're stopped from driving when they become incapable
