How to lose money on PS3

Yesterday, an ad appeared on our bulletin board at work - some guy selling two new PS3s. One was with two games (same as the bundle deal in Game) and one was with no games - both were £50 more than you would pay in the shops.

Today, he's updated his ad to say "Ok, I was just testing the water" and has reduced the price to the RRP - I guess he may have got quite a few mails pointing out that they were cheaper in the shops!

Personally - since you wouldn't save anything I'd still buy from the shops. I wonder how many other people pre-ordered multiple times in the hope of making a quick buck and have now found themselves stuck with kit that people can walk into a shop and buy.

Personally, I've got no sympathy. I hope he has to knock £50 and makes a loss. :D

so are these now widely available everywhere?

When I bought mine on Sunday, every shop I went into had them for sale - Game, Curry's, Comet, PC World, Virgin (said they'd only got one) and Woolworths (also said they only had one).

How much are these things now? I heard that they were about £450.00...:(

If this is correct I think I'll go and get a Wii tbh, Sony seem to have lost their way a wee bit. May get a PS3 when they are a bit better priced but I still use my PS2 a lot!!

All the shops I've been in have had stock but not a single one of them has a console running so people can see what it's like - the best I saw was one in a clear box with "dummy unit" on it in HMV, it wasn't connected to anything though.

Game in Camberley had a demo but I was really surprised nobody else did.

i think sony are hoping the ps3 will just sell itself... i was tempted to buy one but opted not to for three reasons:

1) cheap as chips in a years time

2) could buy an eggbox360 with a mod chip and play to my hearts content

3) i don't have £450 to spend in the first place :p

Far to over priced. I dont care if the thing can suck you off their asking £450 for a games console!!!!!!! if the graphics and all the stuff in it means it has to be so expensive then why bother making it that advanced? theres just no point when you consider the developers wont use its potential anyway.

Id wait until it plummets in price

I actually don't have a problem with the price. My understanding (which may be wrong) was that Xbox costs about the same if you buy all the stuff that is already part of PS3 (DVD, wireless etc.). I would rather pay more and get it all together.

However - I suspect Sony were expecting better sales, and there are enough comments on this board to suggest that the price is a problem and Sony may have made a mistake.

Everyone is forgetting that it comes with the Blu-Ray High Definition DVD Player!!!

Microsoft have released their HD DVD player as an add on now and it brings the price of the 360 plus the HD to just over £400! If you think of it like that the PS3 doesn't really seem that much more expensive. Especially as it's just been released...

If you have a big HD TV the picture quality will be amazing :) I've not bought one yet as I'm rather skint but I will buy one later in the year ready for Grand Theft Auto 4...

My local Tescos had a stack of them when I went in this morning :) I'm glad I didn't pre-order any to re-sell

I saw one in Dixons at the weekend. It was playing Ridge Racer, not in hi-def, and it didn't look any better than the PS2.

Not only that, but the console is giant! It must be full of air ready for when Sony bring out a mini version of it in a couple of years time.

Which is a pointless add on considering Blue Ray aint ever gona take off, expensive and unnecessary, kinda like the PS3 in general i think!!

Well its the most successfull launch of any console in history (excluding Sony's own PSP). We got 800000 ready for launch day and shifted 165k in the opening weekend, not bad figures really. Because there were enough units available, theres no shortages, which is a good thing when you look at it, also factor in no Christmas rush . .

In case you are wondering, the marketing push is to put them up as "exclusive" purchases atm. Something that Sony learnt the hard way (and Microsoft blundered spectacularly into with the 360 launch) is that if you undercut your own pricing for your previous console you kill it overnight. Since PS2 is still owning the 360 in retail the PS3 can afford to slow burn and allow us to re-coup some development costs from the early adopters, while continuing to build up a solid Blueray user base.

The Wii is a great piece of kit (until you get bored of having no games for it) and I own a 360, and it is also a great console. Sony will lose market share this generation, but make no mistake, they will still be top!

Possibly, but remember no company has ever managed to remain on top in the games industry for more than two generations!

If Blueray does win the format war (and its off to a pretty good start) and Microsoft do start using it in the 360 and later consoles, then Sony has already won to a large extent, as they will get royalties from every disk sold.
