bolarbag
http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html Unadultered p*sh However a 275 should be fine on a 9inch wide wheel, wouldnt go wider!
Jake
Unadultered p*sh What do you mean?
bolarbag
Fat or thin? The question of contact patches and grip. Fat tyres look good. In fact they look stonkingly good. In the dry they are mercilessly full of grip. In the wet, you might want to make sure your insurance is paid up, especially if you're in a rear-wheel-drive car. Contrary to what you might think (and to what I used to think), bigger contact patch does not necessarily mean increased grip. Better yet, fatter tyres do not mean bigger contact patch. Confused? Check it out: Highly contradictive as earlier in is his preach he rages that there is no need for wider tyres because they dont increase performance...lots of good info gathered until this part
Jake
What part of that don't you agree with? I'm not seeing a contradiction.
bolarbag
He is basically slating wide tyres...or wider tyres, his example of; http://www.carbibles.com/images/contactpatch1.gif Is misguiding as cars are rarely an even weight on all fours, in his theory if I use 265 instead of 285wide tyres, assuming its the same profile, I would not increase grip because my load weight has not increased...and then even if my load weight does increase i.e under speed I would be losing traction anyway as the wheels turn? Why dont I slap on the minimal width of tyre then, instead of paying the extra 80odd quid per wheel if I aint gonna increase my grip? p.s I have a 9.5inch rear rim on 285s, I would also stick with 265 max for a 9inch rim, but the extra 5mm either side is barely gonna make a difference
chilli
ahhh I've heard this theory before, it's basically a misguided application of the laws of static friction. What it doesn't take into account is that tyres don't entirely grip using normal rules of friction for fairly flat surfaces, they grip in a different way because roads are very coarse and irregular surfaces. Ian W
i would go no wider than a 265 for a 9j rim. just imo of course.
Ryan.G
Ok have gone for the 9.5j Thanks
Lucifer
Dont bother with a 275. Go 265 and buy better rubber.
