Worrying/odd noise at rear on accel' and right turns

I have developed a definite new sound which occurs under certain circumstances.

1. On hard acceleration, actually when the 2nd turbo comes online, the sound starts. It is from the left rear of the car, almost as if inside. It sounds like a fast "woop-woop-woop-woop." Very odd. But only ever on hard acceleration.

2. Then it started during these circumstances. Accelerating when turning quite tightly right (ie out of a roundabout)(weight to left) and with full grip. The sound is a rotational and escalating "woop-woop-woop"

Can anyone shed light on this worrying new sound? I was thinking diff possibly? No other complaints and drives fine.

Have you seen the recent tech thread concerning the rear subframe / floorpan?

Although I would think yours isn't quite old enough to show failure signs as yet. Is it LSD equipped? I distinctly remember those sounds under load which tended to lead to diff failure, they were as a result of awkward diff loadings caused by the fatigue. Other symptoms were twisted / warped driveshafts and occassionally props :(

As above and just to rule out the basic things to check, jack your car up and check both rear wheels for play, put your hands either side of the wheel and push and pull in the same motion as rubbing your hands together, it could just be a wheel bearing on it's way out, this of course will sound more when under load and there should be near to no movement at all.

Have a look at your shocks, it could be leaking, check by pulling the rubber surround down and see if any fluid has seaped.

Thanks guys, did it again to make sure on the way home from work. Moderate acceleration on a right hander and get this wobbly/rotational sound from rear right.

I do have the LSD took it to a car park and did very slow left and right turns. Did this fine with no signs of lock up. All shocks are just replaced so unlikely to be that. I'll get it jacked up and see if there is any sign of play. After that I guess it will be off to the garage. Hope its a bearing though.

Now I know that TOYOTA have already answered :D but does anyone else have experience of this kind of thing?

What are the costs on bearing/lsd replacement?

Bearings are around £130, not 100% on that though, if it is the diff, might be worth a look to see how much the TRD unit is?
