Engine Questions (with pics) (Unknown Bits and Cat)

OK, I'll admit I've still got a lot to learn, so would appreciated some guidance. There are still some components in the engine bay that, to be honest, I'm not sure what they are!

The first pic shows a pipe that goes from the engine bay to the body of the vehicle. What is this, or really - what's at the end of it? An external waste gate?

The next pic shows some ducting. The ducting originally went from there down to just above the SMIC. I can't see where the air actually ended up - what was the original point of this? I assume it can now be removed ...

The next two pictures show the the pipe that leads to the exhaust (the car doesn't look so pretty on the underside does it?!). The connecting pipe to the engine is just a plain steel pipe. The pipe in the pics has a couple of "nodules" in it that I'm guessing is part of the cat system. From this, I guess I have a single D-cat. Is it the 1st or 2nd cat that is left? I have an HKS Super Drager exhaust - can someone give me a link to a replacement pipe (e.g. on Envy or alike) to make the system fully d-cat please? Do I need to get under there and measure what diameter the pipe is so the same diameter goes all the way through?

Any help much appreciated!

No1 - pipe to your SMIC

2 - air intake to the standard airbox (removed). there's another underneath the light.

3+4 The underneath of your car? :p Doesn't look like a cat, but must be a cheap mild steel replacement pipe or something?

First cat isn't visible unless anyone can tell from that angle? It's closer to the manifold.

1. Aaaah - there's another pipe from the SMIC that passes along with width of the bumper and enters the engine from the other side, so I guess there's kind of a "circuit" of cooled air?

2. Yeap - spotted the other bit under the light. Will therefore remove this in the name of weight reduction :-) But nice to know why it was there in the first place.

3. First cat is just a straight through pipe from what I can tell - so looks like this one is a BPU which is a pleasant surprise :-)

Looks to me like you may have the first cat still in place, but its very difficult to see, as if it is still there it is very short and you can only really see it by getting further under the car,

don't remove the air intake, as it does provide very much needed cold air to your aftermarket air filter, i recently re fitted one to my car and found a vast temp difference;)

Ben, here is a photo of the standard cats, the longer one is the second cat which you don't have, the smaller first one is located at the front of the system and joins to the exhaust manifold connected to the engine. It's very difficult to tell from the pics if you still have the first cat or not.

OK, here are some more. From Nic's pictures it looks like it's Double D-Cat to me? (Which is actually kinda a bummer in a way because it means to make the car go faster I'm really looking at big single next without any other modifications I can do).

What boost are you running?

I class BPU as running 1.2 bar and the supporting mods to get there. With a single decat and no form of boost controller you'll probably be hitting around 0.9 bar.

Hi Thorin, my DEFI boost gauges are on order so unable to tell at the moment. Check out my garage - I _think_ I pretty much have everything for BPU, just need to find out if it has the first cat on and if it has an upgrade fuel pump and spark plugs (and some users recommend an AEM High Volume Fuel Filter).

No need for a "high volume fuel filter".

Like I said, with no form of boost controller you'll be hitting around 0.9 bar with single de-cat, so you'd need a boost controller or bleed valve to up the boost... or double de-cat and restrictor ring.

Am I right in thinking that even with a boost controller it can only controller what you have available - i.e. it will allow you to control 0 - 0.9 bar, and you need to get rid of the first cat to allow you to boost higher?

I hear a lot of people (on the J-spec) get a restrictor ring of 1.2 bar. Does anybody fit a larger restrictor ring to allow short over boosts to say 1.3 bar using a boost controller with overboost (scramble) function? Or is this ill advised?

Other way round. A boost controller can only RAISE boost, not lower it. That's why people have restrictor rings, to stop runaway boost. It's not a good idea to raise the boost too much with the 1st cat in as it's pretty restrictive.

Ben, you still have the first (and most restrictive) cat fitted, you only have a 2nd decat pipe fitted

I'd suggest you do the following.

1. Check condition of your intercooler, if in poor condition replace before proceeding. Also get your car to an experience Supra mechanic, get it serviced and checked to make sure the engine is in good condition and able to cope with the increase in boost. I'd recommend taking a drive up to see Chris Wilson

2. Fit a first decat pipe and restrictor ring.

3. Fit new cooler grade plugs, see HERE

4. Walbro fuel pump, part number GGS342.

5. Fit Fuel Cut Defender (FCD)

6. Fit your boost gauge to monitor boost levels.

I'd also sugegst fitting the following

1. New Oxygen sensor if it hasn't been replaced for a while

2. New OEM fuel filter.

3. New airfilter and fluids (engine oil, gearbox oil, etc.)

Optional.

If you want more control over the boost you could fit a restrictor ring to limit boost to say 1bar and then fit a boost controller to allow you to raise the boost as desired. I would only raise to a max of around 1.2bar

1.3BAR is pretty marginal on standard injectors. To run that you really want bigger injectors (better) or to increase fuel pressure a bit with an adjustable regulator (not so good). Either of those would need a piggyback fuel controller like an Emanage to control. Plus personally I would want to run an uprated SMIC or a FMIC.

Hi Nic,

Am planning on removing the first D-Cat, and have those DEFI gauges on order from yourself. Will hopefully get time to see what spark plugs I have fitted - but will likely get some new ones as has done 10k miles since I've had it so due a change I would have thought. Likewise with the fuel pump - I need to take a look to see what is in there.

I have the TRL Voltage Fuel Cut Controller which I think does the same job as the FCD.

What boost controller would you recommend? Is it safe to overboost for a few seconds to a little above 1.2 (if measuring temperatures etc).

Nic - can you recommend a wideband AFR gauge (preferrably that matches the blue DEFI link gauges on order). I would like to know if she's running lean after the upgrades. Also, what would you recommend for a boost controller if I decide I want to go over 1.2 bar a notch every now and again (preferrably something that allows an overboost/scramble function from the steering wheel).

Intercooler seems in good condition, along with the radiator, but am considering a HKS Front-Mounted Intercooler Type R and Fluidyne Radiator - depends how much cash I have in April - they may have to wait.

Hi Ben

I have sent you a pm with some recommendations and prices.

Yes the TRL Fuel Cut Controller is the same as an FCD.

I'd recommend any one of the following boost controllers depending on your budget

BLITZ Dual SBC Spec R

BLITZ SBC-ID III

BLITZ SBC i-Color

New HKS EVC VI

A boost controller with scramble mode will allow a few seconds (manually set) of increased boost.

I've just bought one of the Innovate AFR gauges for my car, just waiting for the delivery, see HERE

Give me a shout about radiators and intercoolers and I'll go through the options with you.

cheers
