Website Optimisation: Backlinks?

Recommended Posts

I've just had a company on the phone trying to sell me the benefits of 'backward linking' as a tool to improve the position of our website on search engines. They promised 500+ links, we have about 40 at the moment.

It all sounded impressive, but isn't cheap. Does anyone know if this is an effective method of improving website visibility? We are already on google adwords and have an SEO company working on the site.

Would something as simple as adding our URL to my sig on here help?

Thanks.

If the back links are from a 'trusted and relevant site' (i.e from the same or similar industry as your web site, and have been established for a bit) then it will be worth something.

If it's from a bunch of random spam sites, than I suspect it's not worth it...

The GoogleBot is a very clever thing these days.. gone are the time of fooling it with spammy back links.. :)

As mentioned, 'link popularity' is only going to benefit your website ranking if:

:: (a) the websites linking to you are in the search engines index in the first place

:: (b) the linking websites are related to your industry.

Both web design and search engine optimisation industries are cottage industries, anyone can claim to be a web designer / search engine optimisation specialist, but it doesnt gaurantee they are any good.

Most use crude spamming techniques, which often work against you on 'intelligent' search engines like Google. Also stay away from 'doorway pages'.

Having a link in your sig on here wont hurt, infact it may increase the frequency your website gets crawled by search engines, but its questionable if it would boost your ranking unless your website is about supras :)

Backlinks can improve Google ranking, depending on the quality and quantity of the links provided. Google use a PageRank system. Site's are PageRanked from 0 to 10, 10 are site's like microsoft.com, google.com, 9/10 are bbc.co.uk, yahoo.com, 3/10 is mkivsupra.net etc... People pay hundreds of dollars for links on PR7 sites, a link on a PR10 site is probably worth thousands of dollars although they're pretty much impossible to get.

I guess it all depends on what you're trying to promote, whether it's something people search for (you can check the overture of keywords) and how you're doing at the moment in terms of search engine placement. 500 links might be good but it all depends on the quality and placement of those links, if they're going to disappear shortly after you buy them then obviously that's not much good.
