Paul
I know it's been asked before but as many more people have Sat Navs now what with Christmas and all I thought I'd ask opinions/experiences I'm thinking TomTom or Garmin, am I a twat? Is it worth spending round the £300 mark for better spec or stick with the cheaper end? All this techie stuff does my bloody head in
Pot
Got myself a TomTom One with the traffic and speed camera updates... It gets me where I need to go.
Paul
Got myself a TomTom One with the traffic and speed camera updates... It gets me where I need to go. Traffic and speed camera updates? these extra then or on subscription?
Pot
They're on subscription, I think it was about 30 Euros via the TT website at the new year... However, the traffic reports require a connection via your mobile, so you have the cost of your GPRS each time (Which I haven't really noticed in my bill), and the speed camera locations aren't accurate, but as I think I've posted before it means I'm not reliant on it, it helps me out, but I also keep an eye out myself... For £200 (Or whatever it is now), plus the 30 Euros, I can't complain and I do like it, I wanted something to get me to places, and it does that... The last niggle I have is that the battery doesn't last too long, but I keep the charger in the car so I don't mind that either... It also tells you your speed, which I think is a lot more accurate than the Supra speedo... Voices can be 'found' free on the tinternetweb if you're into that sort of thing (Yoda's quite good), all in all, if you just want something to get you where you're going, go for it (And it's got more functions than the inbuilt Sat Nav in my Mum's CLK (£1500) which upsets her... lol)
MARTIN R
I have Tom Tom, gets me to my destination and speed camera databases are free at the moment
fishman
even tho i have no experiences of sat-navs i think garmin are better than tomtom, they have been going a long time and have been proven in the air and sea...
Burna
TomTom all the way for me Paul You've got a couple of options: 1. Go out and buy a brand new TomTom One V2 Europe, eg: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1743451146.1174595123@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccciaddkhihklkkcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=939515&category_oid= or 2. Buy an old TomTom One V1 from ebay which has inside it the better screen and satellite receiver which they put in the new ones, but didn't in the other older TomToms. Then just upgrade the software and install the latest euro map If you go the second route and need help with it just let me know
Bobbeh
Garmin here, works well... not that you really need it, useful for places where you've never been before and you need to find somewhere to stay, food etc locally. Also does mobile van/safety camera/fixed camera locations.
Burna
I use this site for the zoned speed camera database http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Cameras
edge
Had a few tom tom 300's. Now got a one with all the updates and extras from fleabay for £2.99 per cd. I use mine all day long as i need it. Very easy to use. Mate has a top garmin one which has all the toys and loves it. Depends what you want realy.
Graham S
I read somewhere that the Tom Tom's are pretty pants in poor weather, with a lot of reports they are often 'searching for satellites' My dad got a road angel 6000 for christmas and it went back quite quickly as he drove all the way to london (from basingstoke) and it never actually picked up a signal(?) I've been looking into one myself recently and I really like the look of the Snooper Syrius, looks stunning!
Pot
My TT hasn't had any issues with the weather... It has issues when you're indoors, but I don't drive the car much there...
edge
I read somewhere that the Tom Tom's are pretty pants in poor weather, with a lot of reports they are often 'searching for satellites' That is true. I leave mine on all day. If its a cloudy day and you turn it off then on again it can take upto 10 mins to find those dishes in outer space

ivan
I had TT5 and 6 on a Mio PDA. Absolutely brilliant route finding and no problems with locking in on satellites.

jakewebster
I have a pioneer x1 and its brilliant! (might be slightly broken at the moment however) A it more pricey but does dvd's, tv, ipods, just about everything! Worth the extra money imo! Jez
I have tt5 - have had a few problems as it uses waypoints and can get upset if you know a quicker way than it is saying. If you go the pda route ensure that it supports tt6 - tt don't seem to good at making their software retrospectively work on hardware, I'm stuck on tt5 now cos they say tt6 doesn't work on my pda and the tt6 maps don't work with tt5

steb9780
I got a Garmin nuvi 300, so far it's been shithot. I get the speed camera database from the gps world site someone has given above. I opted for it over the TomTom as the Garmin's supposedly re-calculate routes quicker, if you miss turnings etc. Also as someone said above if people put there lives in Garmins hands for years i.e. sailing and mountaineering then I'll put me getting to a place in it too. The only downpoint the Garmin had to the Tomom's in review's was it had a quieter speaker, but I have mine on 3/4, as full is too loud. fishman
Just to let you know some of the garmin units have 'dead reckoning', which means, when the gps unit loses signal, it still knows where you are and can still navigate. So some units may lose signals in built up areas, and in tunnels, and let you down, but garmin wont....
