Sat Nav experiences ?

Paul

Recommended Posts

I know it's been asked before but as many more people have Sat Navs now what with Christmas and all I thought I'd ask opinions/experiences :)

I'm thinking TomTom or Garmin, am I a twat? Is it worth spending round the £300 mark for better spec or stick with the cheaper end?

All this techie stuff does my bloody head in :( :D

They're on subscription, I think it was about 30 Euros via the TT website at the new year... However, the traffic reports require a connection via your mobile, so you have the cost of your GPRS each time (Which I haven't really noticed in my bill), and the speed camera locations aren't accurate, but as I think I've posted before it means I'm not reliant on it, it helps me out, but I also keep an eye out myself...

For £200 (Or whatever it is now), plus the 30 Euros, I can't complain and I do like it, I wanted something to get me to places, and it does that... The last niggle I have is that the battery doesn't last too long, but I keep the charger in the car so I don't mind that either... It also tells you your speed, which I think is a lot more accurate than the Supra speedo... Voices can be 'found' free on the tinternetweb if you're into that sort of thing (Yoda's quite good), all in all, if you just want something to get you where you're going, go for it :)

(And it's got more functions than the inbuilt Sat Nav in my Mum's CLK (£1500) which upsets her... lol)

TomTom all the way for me Paul :)

You've got a couple of options:

1. Go out and buy a brand new TomTom One V2 Europe, eg: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1743451146.1174595123@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccciaddkhihklkkcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=939515&category_oid=

or

2. Buy an old TomTom One V1 from ebay which has inside it the better screen and satellite receiver which they put in the new ones, but didn't in the other older TomToms. Then just upgrade the software and install the latest euro map ;)

If you go the second route and need help with it just let me know :)

Had a few tom tom 300's. Now got a one with all the updates and extras from fleabay for £2.99 per cd. I use mine all day long as i need it. Very easy to use.

Mate has a top garmin one which has all the toys and loves it. Depends what you want realy.

I read somewhere that the Tom Tom's are pretty pants in poor weather, with a lot of reports they are often 'searching for satellites'

My dad got a road angel 6000 for christmas and it went back quite quickly as he drove all the way to london (from basingstoke) and it never actually picked up a signal(?)

I've been looking into one myself recently and I really like the look of the Snooper Syrius, looks stunning!

That is true.

I leave mine on all day.

If its a cloudy day and you turn it off then on again it can take upto 10 mins to find those dishes in outer space

I have tt5 - have had a few problems as it uses waypoints and can get upset if you know a quicker way than it is saying.

If you go the pda route ensure that it supports tt6 - tt don't seem to good at making their software retrospectively work on hardware, I'm stuck on tt5 now cos they say tt6 doesn't work on my pda and the tt6 maps don't work with tt5

I got a Garmin nuvi 300, so far it's been shithot. I get the speed camera database from the gps world site someone has given above.

I opted for it over the TomTom as the Garmin's supposedly re-calculate routes quicker, if you miss turnings etc. Also as someone said above if people put there lives in Garmins hands for years i.e. sailing and mountaineering then I'll put me getting to a place in it too. The only downpoint the Garmin had to the Tomom's in review's was it had a quieter speaker, but I have mine on 3/4, as full is too loud.

Can't believe no one's answered this yet :D :innocent: j/k

LOL:d trust you to reply to that;)

Thanks for all the good info and feedback, my neighbour works for some wholesale techie stuff supplier and has just said he can get me TT's at trade prices:)

I'll see if and what he comes back with price wise and what models he can get as he mentioned it before and came back with sod all.

Just to let you know some of the garmin units have 'dead reckoning', which means, when the gps unit loses signal, it still knows where you are and can still navigate. So some units may lose signals in built up areas, and in tunnels, and let you down, but garmin wont....
