True, ET Street Radials and BFG G-Force T/A Drag Radial are OK though.

The general rule of thumb is that if you can use them on the road legally, they can pass an MOT and they have an E mark you are OK. A proper list should be available soon but for now that's what I'm working to.

Nope, they told me not drag radial, they said Comp t/a would pass though.

Wouldnt like to see anyone going there and getting turned away.

They need to get a list out asap then, the reps are being told one thing and then individuals are being told something else. There also seems to be a number of sources for info at the moment, fingers crossed this is sorted asap!

This is what I have:

Class A, B or C

Allowed-

Any E marked road tyre with full width tread pattern and a minimum of 1.6 mm tread depth at all times during the event.

Additionally - any tyre listed in current MSA list 1A or 1B. we'll use the latest current version if any updates are given prior to say 1st Feb 07 as finalising date.

http://www.msauk.org/uploadedfiles/msa_forms/bluebooks/Blue_Book_2006_R.pdf

Also the following DOT marked tyres- subject as ever to legal min tread depth at all times;

Nitto 555R and 555RII, Toyo 888s (on msa list), BF Goodrich Comp TA or G Force TA. Dunlop DJ01s and their new replacement are listed within the MSA list i believe. We will also allow the Mickey Thompson ET street RADIAL (please note this is the one with the full tread pattern)

Class D- allowed

any of the above as per class A, B or C, and in addition certain specific Drag wrinkle wall tyres incl crossply;

Hoosier DOT drag, Mickey Thompson ET Street wrinkle wall (2 tread band type).

No full slicks will be allowed in ANY class at this time, altho Class D may yet be allowed slicks subject to confirmation pending.

Class D is the demo class, ABC is the stuff of interest to us, the MSA link doesn't work, may need a login to their site.

This is the tyre I run:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=g-Force+T%2FA+Drag+Radial+2

There's some confusion over the name... really it's the Comp T/A which is a "Drag Radial" but tirerack have given it their own name to differentiate it from the previous model and so in that link it's called the g-force T/A Drag Radial 2.

Regardless it is DOT marked and is street legal in the UK; you could pass an MOT with them on provided you meet the minimum tread depth requirement - there's no reason this tyre shouldn't be legal at TOTB especially given it has a more 'normal' tread pattern than the Mickey Thomson ET Street Radial mentioned above.

Fancy a set of the MT's though - they do look a good option going by the lack of rain grooves and maximum rubber contact area. The MT ET Streets always were a bit 'cheaty' IMO considering they're wrinkle walls and hardly suitable for the street, it's not really a fair comparison of times from these to the ET Street Radial and BFG Comp T/A which can be street driven (although wont last too many miles and are laughable in the rain).

Cheers,

Brian.

Michael - thanks for that URL, that's the first time anyone has ever sent me the actual bloody link to the discussion. Usually I just got sent to 22b.com from which I just couldn't find even the bulletin board, just a load of adverts... Bit late now though

Further info on tyres:

Further to recent emails about this subject, we can now confirm that Scoobyshootout and TOTB event entrants will qualify for Toyo championship status, which basically means we can supply Toyo888s and T1R's to any paid up competitors at a special price direct from Toyo.

It's likely also that prizes of Toyo tyres will be available to competitors already running 888s or T1Rs

If you can pass this onto all teams and competitors we would appreciate it, anyone interested in a tyre price can email us on [email protected]

Many thanks

Chris

So now Toyo are sponsoring the event as well as everything else I'm expecting to see a reduction in the entry fee :rlol:

Not the most user friendly site and forum to use is it :(

After all this time you'd think there might be a TOTB forum on the official site for this kind of thing.

I've been thinking about the issue's of fairness and I think that the organisers would find it easier to limit tyre sizes rather than compounds.

I would propose a contact patch equalising setup. So that all cars have a similar amount of grip no matter what the drivetrain.

ie. RWD and FWD are allowed upto 28"tall x 13" wide *contact patch* at 20psi tyres...4wd's would be allowed 26"x8" contact patch @ 20psi (I'm not doing any maths here just making a point). This would then be A) Enforceable B) FAIR!

Anyone else think this is a good idea?

Oop, my mistake, Toyo aren't sponsoring the event, Chris has put me right on that :)

Toyo are NOT sponsoring the event financially, they have accepted it as a chamopinship which means anyone wanting toyo tyres can buy them from us at a much cheaper price than thro dealers normal retail, thats all.

Sorry about that Chris, and hello

So as a drag tyre they're rubbish...

Everything's relative. Surely such tyres will have a softer compound and thus will offer more traction off the line than your average road tyre? Given the airfield surface at Elvington where the 60ft's don't seem to be spectacular amongst the RWD cars even running various drag radials, maybe this kind of compound is a better option on that surface?

Cheers,

Brian.

The MR2 chaps went for the R888s last year and liked them a lot, improvements over the normal road tyres they use at least.

They are also far more useful on the road when you are driving home afterwards :)

Any info on 60fts from the last TOTB? Would need to be people remembering them as 60fts were never released in the results for some reason

At the pod which is a decent tarmac surface, it seems the ET Streets are king.... at Elvington it's a relatively abrasive yet low grip concrete type airfield surface - I'm thinking soft compound track tyres may be a better option for us RWD guys.

Cheers,

Brian.

I can't seem to find the 60ft info I have somewhere but at TOTB IV we had mixed results - a guy on full drag MTs got a 1.53 and another chap on R888s got a 1.444

The first car went on to do a 11.60@120mph with a slipping clutch, I'm not sure about the other, my info is elsewhere.

1.444 - So they must be pretty decent then!

The MR2's tend to have better traction off the line than most RWD cars because of the weight over the rear axle but surely that would translate to around 1.6 sec 60ft's on a Supra running R888's?

Cheers,

Brian.

  • 2 weeks later...
So just how good are 888's for drag and how discounted?? Any sample pricing to fit UK 17's or similar?

Cheers,

Brian.

I will find out at the Santa Pod day if all goes well :) as thats what I'll have on. I got them for around £750 (fitted) for the set for stock UK sizes on mine.
