You need to remove all the dash parts and then the stereo is held in with 4 screws. Here's how to get the dash off (I've lifted it from someone else's post!)

Remove the section around the gear-lever by pulling gently. Remove the top-most section by undoing the screws and unplugging the warning light clusters and hazard switch.

Remove the section around the clocks with the same tugging technique you learned from removing the 1st part. Then all the screws securing the head-unit section should be revealed. Undo these screws and tug again (with that same pulling technique) and undo the attached wiring.

Tip: If you switch the IGN on with the dash panel removed you will get your air-bag light on continuously after it's all put back. To switch it off, see the instructions on the MKIV website. Also, the TRAC switch wiring can sometimes get caught as you replace the panel. This can sometimes distort the switch and throw up spurious TRAC faults. So do make sure the wiring is in the correct place.

(Me again) When the dash is off, you should see the 4 screws that hold the stereo in. Undo them and pull the unit towards you. Fit the band expander between the main aerial lead and the aerial socket on the back of the stereo. You then need to find a live for the band expander. (Clock is a good a place as any)

FWIW, my car came with a Jap stereo and band expander from JIC, and the radio reception was absolute shite. I got a UK unit from the for sale wanted section on here and it is a million times better. If you fancy something aftermarket, Matt H will do you a top deal :)

I fitted mine to the lead comming out of the ariel in the rear wing.

Just take the trim panels off in the boot, find a power source for it and connect that baby up.... ( used the source from the boot light on the opposite side )

Seemed to work ok for me, and a lot less hassel than removing radio etc...

Me too :D

Seemed to be the obvious place :)

It was much easier than pulling the radio out (not that its hard anyway!) I connected the power to an ignition switched lead on the CD changer.
