cookci
I know on my car the top hose used to swell up and go rock solid but maybe that was due to the HG failure On my girlfriends celica the same top hose (once the car is at operating temperature) the hose doesnt get pressured at all to the point i can almost squash it closed with my fingers when running! is that what mine should be like? Ric
But you said you didn't have HG failure

Marty
Im interested in what people think to this too, as mine does exactly the same, the top radiator hose swells and pressurises a fair bit. But, im pretty certain my headgasket is fine and dandy, as ive only travelled about 300metres since doing my single conversion, theres no white smoke whatso ever, plus my headgasket was fine before doing my single Im thinking maybe i have an airlock or my (new trd style) radiator cap is a dud
Kranz
Pump your tyres up to 15psi (or let them down) and press on the sidewall. This is what a top hose should feel like at MAXIMUM pressure... i.e. when the temperatures are at max (around 120 degrees C). At idle with the engine up to temperature (87-ish deg C) is will be running much less pressure, so should be more squishy. Rock solid sounds bad. Supra ST Myster
that should be normal for the pipe to be pressurised after a drive, which is why they same never to open the rad cap as the water will spray all over you and be very hot! as it cools down the rubber pipe will soften and you can sqeeze it but after a drive it will be solid

(OOh err!). Some pressure is normal during normal running, but it should not be venting through the rad cap and ballooning the top hose. Marty
Mines pretty rock solid;) , after 5minutes running too, im swaying towards a dodgy thermostat now actually, i'll have to take the bugger out and see what i find
Marty
Just found this, which kinda confirms it.... http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=71023&highlight=top+hose+pressure PHEW
Kranz
Mines pretty rock solid;) , after 5minutes running too, im swaying towards a dodgy thermostat now actually, i'll have to take the bugger out and see what i find Its probably fine mate. If you're not losing coolant & there's no bubbles in the header tank after a 'spirited' drive its probably ok. Thermostat?? Either works (and all is ok) or it doesn't and sticks closed (boils over & head gasket is knackered) or sticks open (takes ages to warm up). Chuck it and get a new one if there is some doubt, cos it boils fast if stuck shut!!
