Chris Wilson
I seem to recall someone being a farmer who was having some problems with a cow calving? Anyone know much about Highland cattle? Could you run 2 bulls together form a young age, with no heifers present, or would they fight? Am I right in thinking they are fairly calm beasts, generally speaking? What are they worth as bullocks? Cheers.
Ian W
I don't think you'd have a problem with them if together from a young age, Chris. no idea about price mind you. thinking of expanding the herd are we?

Steviekid
Anyone know much about Highland cattle? Could you run 2 bulls together form a young age, with no heifers present, or would they fight? Are they entire bulls or bullocks? Either way, they should be fine really. We've got clients that keep 30+ fully grown entire charollais bulls together with no problem, especially with no females around. Am I right in thinking they are fairly calm beasts, generally speaking? They're not bad, although it really depends on how much handling they've had. You've always got to be wary of the horns, they can do you a lot of damage by accident. What are they worth as bullocks? If they're being kept as bullocks presumably they'll be sold for meat or as stores in which case their value will be similar to any other breed. Chris Wilson
Steviekid: Thanks for detailed reply! Just toying with getting 2 or 3 cattle to keep some grassland down and to look a bit attractive. They'll be for hobby only, none commercial. I quite fancy buffalo or bison, but the required fencing for these is a moot point, I can't get any sense out of the fellow at the council who issues our DWA permits, he's never come across anyone keeping buffalo or bison round here... The only reason we'd choose 2 or 3 bullocks (intact or castrated) is they look more impressive. I guess it would be more sensible to have 2 heifers and one bull, and breed the things! Pete
he's never come across anyone keeping buffalo or bison round here... Nope, I have to say it's been a while since I last past a Buffalo or Bison in Shropshire. Can't you get fresians and give them furry coats to wear? I don't know if it's the same in England but guys with Highlanders up here get a bit of cash from the tourist board as they apparantly attract you foreign types to the area.
