Supra v Skyline

IMO decide what you want from the car and how much you have to spend and take it from there. They're very different cars to drive and both have their positive and negative points. You can't skimp on servicing for either car though, or it'll come back to bite you.

It's hard to compare both cars when they're modified though. I've been in a big twin Supra that went like stink on boost, but drove like a dog off boost. If that was the only Supra I'd been in then I wouldn't have been left with a good impression, same goes for the Skyline. Suspension and brakes are critical too... Drive a good few examples before making your mind up and approach older big power cars with caution. A full history is essential, as is getting it checked over by someone that knows what they're looking at.

I think the Supra is a much prettier car, and the RWD is huge fun. However I much prefer the R34, it really is an awesome to drive. The interior is typical Japanese, but the Nismo MFD means all your essential meters such as boost, oil temp/pressure/EGT etc are neatly displayed on a single monitor without the need for guages everywhere.

I was looking at R34 GTR's before I got my second Sup the things that tiped the balance were

1) Running costs (yeah I could afford to buy one but not keep it on the road)

2) Insurance (no one would touch me for under 2k)

3) Supra is RWD need I say more

4) I felt the skyline was driving me and not me driving it. I felt that you should never rely upon technology because as soon as you do that it will brake leaving you in the sh*t

yeah I understand that and loved the idea behind all the tech but I had this feeling that one day I would plant it into the courner expecting techno wizadary to keep me true, only for it to say "please press ctrl alt del"

If I had the money I would have both and if the insurance was a bit more realistic I would have gone for the R34

I know what you mean, plays on my mind too.... I'm still learning how to drive mine, need to sort out a track day really.

Hopefully Bill Gates wasn't involved in the S/W !

I was in this situation, was looking at liners, rx's, supras and scoobs...

Scoobs i found boring, and a bit too common,

Rx's were a bit too bad on fuel/oil.rebuilds

So that left the liner/supra.

Insurance on a GTS (which would have been slower than the sx ive just sold) £1000  Add to this nissan are rust magnets, and its a bit of an expensive tin can!

For the same money, ive bought a nice TT supra, and insure it for about half the cost.

Depends what your priorities are, i was slighty aggrived by being charged loopy insurance for a car just because it has SKYLINE written on the boot. (that and i love supras, justs didnt realise i could actually afford one  )

Have just seen the picks of Nicks Skyline, that is one awsome car!

If I had a choice of a supra and a skyline with those looks I'd have to go for the skyline.

The R34 is obviously a more expensive car, but I wouldn't mind paying more as it is a newer car. You could spend 20k on a skyline you'll love, or 20k on a brand new average car that will be just something that gets you from a to b.

When I compare mpg of supras/ skylines to average cars, I always subtract the mpg of the supra/ skyline from that of an average 'sporty' car and that is what i concentrate on.

Supra/skyline 20mpg

Average 'sporty' 30mpg

extra 10 mpg doesn't sound as frightening as 18 - 20 mpg.

This is how I try and justify the extra cost to myself. (And my wife lol)

If Mpg is the first issue you are thinking about then you are in the wrong place.

It depends on what you are used to driving and what your goals are.

The skyline is a bit more hardcore you have to rev it harder to get it going but it involves you more in the experience. The Supra can do that but it is also really good at long distance cruising. think jaunts to Europe, due to the torque and the way the turbos deliver there power you could drive it like miss daisy one day (6th gear at 30 mph) or thrash it round the Nurburgring and cruise back without any problems at all.

It seems to me you have already made your mind up, one point though why come here to wind people up ? We are an owners club for Supras of course we are going to view our cars a bit higher than others, hence why we own them, does that pass as entertainment  ?

I have owned both

My R33 LM - 500 HP (but lower torque then equivalent Supra due to engine capacity etc)

Fantastic handling and a lovely car to drive

Mega expensive to run and map properly (fewer able mechanics and £100 per hour at Abbey etc)

Build quality much poorer than supra

I preferred the Supra because when all said and done they are still just glorified 'taxis' :)

I had an R33 before my Supra and as previously stated Skylines cost a lot more to run/maintain than a Supra. Right now I can say that I enjoyed my GTR more than my Supra so far but I'm yet to go BPU and once I do I think my opinion will change. Id defo go for a Supra if you want reliablity.

I'm running a R34 GT-T at 300ish bhp and I can say that while its expensive to keep it running (alot more reasonable thanks to the excelent Turbo Fit) I wouldnt change it for anything!

Over the last 8 months maintainence + things going wrong has worked out at about 300 quid a month, but alot of things that have been replaced should be good for many years to come (touch wood) so I'm hoping the costs should start to fall a bit.

I spend a fortune on petrol, it seems very thirsty, but then I do get flames out the back everytime I shift up at full rpm :D

we run a 34 gtr with hybrids. I don't like the look of the thing - think it's ugly, but it is tight to drive. don't like the 4wsteer at medium speed on public roads, although the suspension is better.

been through 3 supras now, all while we had a gtr. supra's are in my blood!

gtr's are also really bad on fuel. a motorway run will see decent return in sup. and unless you have a monster gtr a bpu will take some beating on the dual carriageway. You would need a massive monster gtr to beat a well sorted sup single.. we have looked at some - they go for 65k plus these days -

your comparrision is a bit off i reckon.

R33 V supra - its got to be the supra any time, the R33 is ugly

R34 V supra - the R34 is a £30k plus car? its not much of a comparrision if you can afford one go for that.

its like saying ive got 100k to spend, should i go for a lambo or a passat? theres no choice!!
