Supra v Skyline

Have any of you had experience of owning a supra and a skyline? I have started to look around for a new toy and have always fancied owning a Supra tt, but after looking around and reading up on both am starting to lean towards an R33 / R34 GTR skyline. I prefer the idea of owning a supra, but the skyline seems to be more practical and reliable. I'd love to have a fast car, but don't want to keep forking out buckets of money on silly repairs and break downs. Also on the odd occasion it would to be nice to be able to pick up friends, the supras rear seat seems to be more for carrying the odd bag of shopping. It would be interesting to get other peoples opinions.

I'd say it would be down to personal preference and financial circumstances.

The skyline cost alot more on insurance as it's in a higher group rating and doesn't quite look as slick as the Supra, hence that's why i plumped for a Supra... i was in the same predicament too ;)

Style and affordable performance or Practicality and high insurance....

I love the looks of the supra, but if it kept breaking down and costing me money, my wife would make me get rid of it.(They have there ways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I think you'll find the Supra running costs are rather low compared to properly maintaining a Skyline!

If money isn't an option then the R34GTR, think they're still £35k+ though!

I've wondered about this, in terms of value for money (which is what most of us are after or we'd probably be buying lambos and ferarris) the supra is hard to beat. Especially what you get for bpu level mods. Bang per buck is massive and with the supra you get the looks too. Both great cars though, respect either way. I saw a nice R34 comming the other way the other day, he flashed me long before I realised what it was, goes to show which is more recognisable (or I have bad eye sight lol) but lots of mutual respect :)

get a tt, and then with all the money you save get a single put on and you'll still have loads left to spend on making it look nice :) and you will still have enough left over for a few full tanks :)

Check Paul_y3k thread in supra chat and see how reliable those guys think supras are.

His car is high mileage and higly modified (single turbo) - it's to be expected.

I know a couple of guys with Skylines, (R33 GTR and R34 GTR) they're only very slightly modified, but their running costs are huge compared to my slightly modded Supra TT. I'm not satying they're unrealiable, its just there's morefrequent and costly servicing. The parts are about the same as the Supra - expensive!

Both great cars.

My mates have all 3 GTRs, the R32, R33 & R34. When we all go out together its an unbeliveable sight. I must admit tho the R34 gets more looks than the cars put together.

All it'll be down to is your own personal taste. Me personally if i had a spare £25k i'd get myself an R34.

Having owned a few 'fast cars' and paid through the nose for running costs and repairs / maintenance the supra is unbelieveable by comparison. Ultra reliable and very well made, what else is there to say!

Consider the supra as a 2 seater, the rear seats really arn't practical except for maybe your children or kid brother or something! :)

I love supras, the only down full for me is the lack of space in the back. If i had the money, i'd buy a supra for me and a nice 'sporty' family car. I really only posted this thread to watch the die hard supra fans defending there babies. lol

I would be totally impartial I promise, its only a peice of metal to me! my honest opinion is that out of all the Jap performance cars about, the supra takes the reliability stakes for me everytime, providing its been well looked after

I don't know about you guys but I conduct a sneaky visit to the GTR Owners Club every so often to see what Skylines are up for sale.

How about an N-Reg R33 GTR with 600 horses and 36,500 miles on the clock - reduced to £12,500 for quick sale!

The closest this forum can get is the 1993 T88 Supe that Paul Whiffen is selling for £16K so £12,500 for the 'Liner' ain't that bad!

I'm thinking about getting a Skyline TBH;)

i think the r34 are stunning, the only thing i dnt like about the sky,s are the interior..look to much like a normal saloon car, supra look good inside and out and does not damage ur wallet to much..lol

but i do want a r34 when they come down in price though:cool:

There are great cars but and having driven almost every varient of R32 & R33,gtr,gts-t,gts,gtst4 etc I can tell you now that the supra will be cheaper to run especially if you go bpu on both, I was really excited the first time to drive an R32 & R33 gtr (both full decat running 1 bar) and to say I was dissapointed was an understatement, maybe I had overated them completely in my head I don't know, but neither felt special to drive, the driving position felt pretty poor in both compared to the supra but the turn in and 'feel' was a nicer but still not as I had expected.

The power delivery is really smooth but because of that it doesnt feel particularly fast, but they do pull hard till redline but anything under 3k felt pretty sluggish imho.

Honestly if you were deciding, I'd go for the R33 GTS, this felt much more lively imo and a bit more fun over the GTR.

In one day I jumped out of an r32 gtr, into an R33 gtr, to R33gts then into a 96 scoob sti, now out of all of these, I'd have no hesitation in taking the scoob, pefect feel, felt fast, and pulled very hard from very low revs, off the line was quite outstanding and before I had ever driven a scoob I was 100% that I would never own one, but I think they are fantastic vfm(ths sti anyway)

The R34 is my dream car so I can't wait to get in to one of these one day :)
