colsoop
I think it is just so they can bring in the pay as you go scheme and everybody will think it is much cheaper. I wonder if the MP's will be taxed on their own vehicles I expect it will run a few years and then when Mr Brown messes up his budget and needs more money to bail out one of the failing public services or hug a prisoner schemes he will just lower the cc bands so that more people fall in to the higher rate tax
Supragal
It's such a shame. Rich people and companies it will (generally) not impact them, but it will hurt the individuals who have worked hard to get a car they love.
Darren
I should imagine they'll make anyone who drives anything above a 1.1 sound as evil as a rampaging bunch of savage kitten eaters... funny how the politicians all drive round in Jags. Theyre hypocritical scum. Oh and they are on 100% expenses so pay for jack themselves...
Havard
I have just pre-empted the situation. My tax was up on the 31st. Just gone down to Wigan post office and taxed the Supe for 12 months £175.00............. Lets see what these tossers come up with on Wednesday. Hopefully it doesn't go to £400 but if it does I have just saved myself £225.00!! I am all for a Supra march down to London....Riot, Riot Riot!! Anarchy Rules!! H. Wez
Oh crap, I just got 6 months tax yesterday, should have got 12 really.
Wez
I feel a downing street petition coming on. As for tax on fuel, we already pay something like 80% tax on fuel now and for what, research apparently, well fuel has changed so much and digging holes is now alot harder, yeah right. Brown is a complete t0sser.
jaymdee
They talked about this last year, and the Supe went up by £5 as any big price increase is done by CO2 for new cars. Ours were all built before they had accurate CO2 levels for new cars, so is only taxed as a greater than 2 ltr engine, pre the new CO2 taxation rules (March 2001). Hopefully it will stay that way

Rob
cant see it applying to cars over 10 years old I seriouly hope so, as I won't be able to afford it. I'm going to be seriouly annoyed if I have to bin the Supra and buy a cheap run-around for the £2000 odd I'll get for selling, just because of some greeny rubbish about CO2 and fuel reserves. DaveK
If they did double the car tax - and it affected older cars - then it would make me consider my current vehicles. I quite like the fact that the 964 is a sunny weekend car - however, if the road tax doubled I would be paying £700 per year to tax the two cars and I think that's getting slightly ridiculous. I can pay it - but it does begin to reach the point where it doesn't seem sensible. By the time you've added up the insurance, road tax, MOT, annual service - it begins to reach the point where it's more sensible (and more fun!) to use it every day. I would seriously consider going back to one car and using the 964 as a daily driver again.
turbonut
At the end of the day, a tax is a tax and there is never a 'fair' way of implementing it. Those that can least afford to pay up are the ones that will get hit hardest whilst the ones that can afford to pay, it will not impact on them one jot Will it make us get out of our supra's and walk? I think not!! Besides, public transport is totally cr@p, always has been and gets worse not better. With decent alternatives we would at least have options. Carl
From what I can gather from the proposals, Gas guzzlers start from Catergory E onwards which means anything above 1549cc-3000cc in the same class pre-2001 and Co2g/km 166-185. I amagine that a large majority of cars on the road are 2.0lt and above. The whole thing stinks.... I'll feel better when I go BPU and get more of my money's worth... garethr
For vehicles registered before 1st March 2001 the highest rate is £175. For vehicles registered on or after 1st March 2001 the highest rate is £195. For vehicles registered on or after 23rd March 2006 the highest rate is £215. The fact that they are talking about VED "doubling to about £400" suggests to me that they may mean the rates for cars registered on or after 23rd March 2006, or at worst those registered on or after 1st March 2001. Here's hoping, anyway

miko_supra
just heard this on the radio. It's very annoying. I totally agree that tax should only be placed on what we consume (ie petrol, or anything really car related or not)
Darren
The Tiger would be permanently SORN...and have some spare plates. They were threatening to make you TAX your car even if it was off the road so no one would be safe.
SupraAyf
If they were serious about the so called CO2 issue they would ban or phase cars with larger engines but no! They just want the money.......... H. That's a very valid point indeed;)
MLC
Motorists will have to pay extra one way or another due to the revenue loss from smokers this year. A lot of smokers, myself included, will be virtually forced to give up to keep a job. Someone's got to pick up the tab and it'll always be the next government pet hate that cops it
PJ
Sick of it, but will they get voted out, I thought they were gone for definate last time but they're still here. I work with a bloke from Nigeria and he thought that I was joking when I was talking about this today, he just couldn't get his head around it. When I informed him how much out of every pound spent on fuel was tax he was gobsmacked. It just does not make sense to people that haven't been so whipped into paying extortionate amounts of tax for feck all services that it's become the norm. He was suprised that no one has kicked off about it and the public hasn't banded together to do something about it. It won't happen will it, people are all very good at complaining vocally, but when it comes to doing anything about it they just sit back, get the vaseline out, lube up and say well I've taken that because I have to. The whole thing in this country stinks to high heaven. There is no accountability for goverment spending, projects that go vastly over budget and then get canned like the CSA computer system, air trafic control schemes etc etc etc... have to be funded from somewhere. EMP expenses have to be paid by someone. Bah!

SMiFFAD
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/news/default.asp?storyId=16035 Looks like it wont affect anything older than april last year, or anything not in current tax group G (aimed at house wifes in range rovers) Not like the media to leave out an important bit of info like that and cause a national outrage We will just have to feel "greatfull" we "only" pay £180. One plus side, this extra revenue from road tax should see a marked improvement in roads, HAHA BOOM BOOM
