edd_t
Currys are doing a great deal on a Panasonic 42" with stand at the moment. £1198 i think. But they are selling off the old HD stuff cheap now to make way for the new TV's with 1080p HD or what ever its called, the new one! Good time to buy if you dont mind the older HD version

dangerous brain
My brother in law just bought a hitachi 42" plasma TV its the mutts nuts (it has a motorised swivel base to change the viewing angle, that impressed me anyways:D) I think it might be this one http://www.johnlewis.com/Shopping/Product.aspx?Type=SKU&ID=230306964&source=14798 The picture is stunning on it and the sound aint half bad either. Digger
If you don't mind dropping down to a 40" tv I can certainly recommend the Samsung LE40F71. LCD, 1080P, 2 HDMI inputs, plus scart, etc, USB output (for a USB printer or something), will accept 9 memory cards so you can view and print pictures via your TV. You name it, it's got it. The HD picture is STUNNING (when watching BBC HD, etc) and I've managed to get a damn good upscaled SD picture on it too. Watching upscaled (1080i) dvd's is superb as well. Costs around £1200 (from Amazon et al), so you'd need to spend more on a stand and surround sound. I'm looking for a 2.1 system at the moment (as the tv sound is pretty awful - but that's it's only downside). The AVForum has been linked to - a LOT of them rave about this tv. Guest StevenSheen
Sony V series have a fantastic image but they come in 40" and 46" varieties, I have the latter and its awesome Comet currently sell it for a smidge under £2k but you can get it for a smidge over 1k here http://www.1staudiovisual.co.uk/catalog/sony-40v2500u-inch-p-1895.html?tduid=bf63a26178868c803f61b0dadc08e76e&ref=kelkoo. LCD is considered to be the winning format in the HD TV run up, also it has one vital quality..it does not suffer from image burn, whilst technology on the top brands has seen its effects reduced if you play your Xbox on it you gonna end up seeing your health bar from call of duty imprinted over your episode of top gear lol! Also just as a side note, if you want to see high definition in its highest form get a TV thats 1080p compatable as that is the format the PS3, Blueray and HD DVD is gonna get the most benefit from, however not essential. 2 HDMI inputs would be handy as well so you have one slot for your DVD player and one for you next gen console or sky HD. Glosphil
I've got an LG 50" which was 1800 when I got it, but less now. But my mate just got a panasonic 50" for 1200 on ebay. Mint. LCD would probably be a better picture than plasma but plasma is fine and LCD is currently more expensive for the larger sizes. Wont be long before its a roll of film you unravel on the wall 200". There are some prototypes already using organic matrix. Oh the joy of things to come. Dont forget a stonking sound system too though
hiten55
my mate had this dilema when he bought his TV. we ended up wakling out with a Samsung DLP. ok their not wall mountable, but a 50" screen for £1200? and the picture beat ANY plasma and LCD available. this was around christmas time so they must be cheaper now. we tested it with a hd dvd on a lcd, plasma, and DLP. it wone hands down!! id strongly reccomend you check one out before deciding against it. my mate wanted his to mount on the wall but ended up redesigning his front room for this bit of kit, it really is that good. supra sam
I work for comet In my opinion the Sony 40W2000 is great set we use it for the sky HD demo. It’s full 1080p and has a great picture for a big LCD, we are also doing the Sony 40V2000 At the moment for £999 which is £200 less than it was a week or so ago it’s identical to the 40v2500 mentioned above except it only has 1 HDMI input. Might be worth waiting tho as I hear there is a new range of Panasonic lcd’s + plasmas coming out soon

RedM
LCD is fine for not getting burnt in images but picture quality is unimpressive when compared to a plasma. You need to decide which is more important to you.

DaveK
I also vote for Plasma over LCD if picture quality is important. I have a Panasonic LCD (can't remember the size - 32" probably), my friend has a Panasonic Plasma which is 42" I think. His picture is definitely better than mine. Nothing wrong with mine - but his is clearly better.

If you want picture quality to be top notch for around £1000 I'd still go for a CRT. Toshiba Picture Frame models are exceedingly good. They just aren't fashionably flat.
