My PC switched itself on last night!

Last night, I turned my PC off just before Fight Club started. Nine minutes into the film and the PC switches itself on. WTF?

It took me by surprise. I thought it was some odd sounding car outside for a second but then realized what it was.

We have had this problem before. Sometimes when switching it off it'll properly close down and then immediately start up again. Not just a reboot. You can see the BIOS screen and all that.

This is the first time it's happened after such a long time time though. Ten minutes! We could have gone out and the PC would have been on for ages.

Thoughts?

it could be set to wake on lan/modem/power in the bios. this enables the pc to be booted via network cables, modems, etc. mine used to do it with wake on modem - every time the phone rung - lol. if you have sky - the update they do on the digi box will also wake the pc. disable it in the bios. also make sure the sleep state is set to s1.

That should do it.

I don't have Sky and the phone didn't ring.

check them anyway. its something to do with the power state when you switch it off. im thinking the state i bios is set to s3. could also be static build up, very unlikely but could be, remove the power cord and press the power button a few times to discharge it.

I do have a restore S3 with ps2/mouse thingummy. It appears twice. One is disabled the other is enabled.

What are they?

We had some motherboards in that did this once we built into PCs. The company that had them said they'd come in the morning to find the PCs on that they'd turned off. Slightly dodgy power management chips I think.

I had one at home myself once that did it from time to time.

I've also seen a kind of bounce affect from the power button do this and had to install capacitors on the switch to prevent a double signal. All very bizarre. (My Elitegroup days).

It wouldn't happen to be XP Media Center would it ?

mine occasionally powers itself on to update the TV guide for Media Center. If it is, you can force a manual update at a more convenient time (when the PC would ordinarily be on)

Just an option - took me ages to work out what it was in my case
