caliAl
Thinking of upgrading to Vista but just wanted to ask and see what everyone thinks about it? I’ve got a good spec PC and don’t have to pay for Vista, but I’m very happy with Windows XP so was wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on it? Daston
sick with XP I have a dual boot machine with vista and xp if you can live without DirectX 10 then stay with XP
caliAl
XP has never done me wrong. So at the moment really can't see the point of upgrading.
caliAl
I guess DirectX 10 will only effect me if I want to play the lastest games?
Daston
indeed crysis will be the first DX10 game think there are patches comeing out for some others but then you will also need a DX10 gfx card

Bobbeh
If you're happy with what you have then stick with it, there is no real need to goto Vista, but its a lot nicer to use

jamesmark
I loved Vista but Fujitsu are a bit shy on thr drivers for my laptop. So unless you have a Vista ready machine you might have issues.
Schtuv
I ran Vista (in beta and RTM releases) for six months ... then went to buy from Apple. Hated it with a passion. Don't get me wrong - I still like XP. Looking forwards, Vista isn't the way I'd prefer to go, though. EDIT: Probably best to call it "The Marmite of operating systems". Daston
DX10 will not work on XP its something to do with the way vista controls DX.
s3upra
I just changed to Vista,pre-loaded on new computer. After reading about it being a memory hog etc etc,i was a little apprehensive. However imo it is a very good OS. I prefer it to xp,one of the most talked about features is "Glass" (i think),basically it all looks alot swisher than xp.I have turned off all this swishness (as i prefer things to run as quickly as possible)and it makes a marked difference. I would have waited longer had i not needed a new computer,as there is very little software/hardware (compared to xp) specifically for Vista, alot of xp stuff works fine, some doesnt. Wait a few months and any bugs that may exist will be ironed out. XP is at least a proven os(after the many updates!)
Pete
DX10 will not work on XP its something to do with the way vista controls DX. More like something to do with the way they want to actually start selling Vista. It's growing on me and XP looks bland when I use that now. As a plus point I've found CRM3 works much better and I've found a bug where it works in Vista and not XP....which has got MS well and truly scratching their heads about. Pot
My PC's 'Good enough', but I can't see the point in slowing it down with Vista, and I'm concerned about the additional DRM cr@p it does... I did want to upgrade to vista when it came out, as I learn by using things rather than reading a book I figured it'd be good for me, but the hassles involved lead me to believe, if my PC isn't broke, then why fix it?... Daston
Well my upgrade process went like this 1) Spend a lot of money on PC bits 2) Build new pc 3) install vista 4) find out that 90% of my games (including newish ones like BF2142 everquest 2 etc) dont work in Vista 5) spend days looking on forums for patches etc 6) partion HDD and reinstall XP on second partition and just use vista for DX10 when crysis comes out

I'm still trying to get my PC running up to speed with the topish stuff as it is... Why slow your PC down when there's no real benefit... If you want it to look fancy, go dual boot with a good linux install...

Like Xp had? So you should be able to run them in Xp compatibility mode. Not 100% sure on that though
caliAl
well I had a bit of spare time this weekend + a new hard drive so thought I would give Vista ago and I'm very happy with it. Don't think I will be going back to XP
Daston
I had to install both BF2 and BF2142 on XP as they didnt work on vista, as it happens I had to reinstall vista last night as it went tits up due to my overclocking but xp is fine. There is a compatability button but like xp it does jack
SupraSkunk
i strongly advise not to install vista at this stage as the driver support and program compatibility for games and stuff is not too great at the mo, also for the record vista aint all that anyway just xp with a windowsblind 5 theme and uses twice the amount of resources, im sticking with xp pro x64 for now as it works so much better than vista and all my games run great
Angarak
The next and last version of DX9 for Windows XP will be DX9L, a half way house between DX9c and DX10. DX10 has been overhauled in a big way, and is more efficient and faster than previous DX9 versions. The new structure of DX10 is responsible for the hardware/driver issues with it. Only 100% DX10 compliant hardware will work with it. Bedtime Reading: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1931918,00.asp Its worth noting that there are EAX sound card issues with Vista too, since Vista removed the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) for DirectSound and DirectSound3D. If you have EAX capable cards, they wont work unless you have a Creative X-FI one with compatible drivers.
