Hi all

My girlfriend was travelling up the m1 in her 1996 1.6 tigra at around 80mph when the cam belt decided to snap:shock: it had a new engine installed at 31000 under warrenty by vauxhall by previous owners, it now has done 74000miles its sat at garage now and they have told me im looking at £750 to fix engine whats in. the cars in good condition apart from that and still selling for around 1800 as its the yellow mtv one. so its too much money just to say sod it and send it to the scrappers.

Advice Please ??? :sos:

I would imagine it's bent a few valves and cracked a few valve guides. You'll have been unlucky if you've got any piston damage. A head rebuild from Vauxhall will probably be quite an expensive option. Really depends what you want to do - your cheapest option is probably to get an in tact head complete with valves etc from a breakers (I'd imagine the 1.6 16v engine is common to corsa's, astra's and vectra's) and get it bolted on by a local mechanic. Make sure the engine codes are the same though!

I'd be very surprised if it's that cheap to fix yours.

These little EcoTec engines were renowned for snapping belts and chewing themselves up. Horrible plastic pretensioners. They needed belt changing very regularly to keep on top of (30k miles I think I did mine?).

Scrapyard engine, chuck it in - flog the car, vow never to buy a Vauxhall again.

the corsa sri engine is pretty much the same as youre car

is the head off?

if not get a boroscope peek down into the cylinders through the plug holes and check the pistons

if there is no damage get the head off and swap it with a scrappy job as pete said

and remember to change the tensioners and t/belt regularly!!

if not burn the bloody thing

vauxhall is the worst!!

not a fan but ive had to change many many engines and heads on them

all eco-tech engines are garbage

I agree but its a real girls car.if it would have held out another few months that would have been fine as she lives in sheffield during week for uni in a right scrat hole, It was in perfect condition befor she moved since its been there, attemted to be broken into and vandalised three times. plus it needs sorting soon as shes driving about in my run about now.

Can you tow it into a tree at high speed? :D Probably find though that the engine out scrapper engine in is your best bet. I have done a complete head refurb on a vauhall omega V6 for it to throw a valve collet 2000 miles later and mush a valve inside the head, thats after spending out a grand buying all the right parts and getting the heads skimmed and pressure tested and over 15 hours of labour between myself and my mate. I scrapped the car out of principle after that.
