Interesting you mentioning the World Cup event in Israel there Liam. If that's the one I'm thinking of, one of my friends actually won the Amateur World Cup in Israel. Her name was Gemma... She actually won it twice. Another friend of mine, called Mel, also won it once. Not bad to have two amateur world champions from the same tiny 12-lane bowling centre! We all had the same coach: Gemma's dad. The guy is a legend and coached a lot of team GB players.

The alley that we use has wooden lanes, so the oil does tend to dry out throughout the evening (the wood absorbs a fair bit, or so I've been told!). It's closing and relocating next summer though, so it'll probably have plastic lanes. Would that a make a difference, or just prevent the lanes drying out to the same extent?

Reactive balls do react a bit differently on plastic lanes. The difference is hard to describe or quantify... It's just different!

How quick the lanes dry out is down to a number of things... How much they put on the lanes to begin with, the temperature of the bowling centre, for example. I presume they dress the lanes immediately before leagues and in the morning?

Wood lanes can dry out quicker than plastic lanes. But on the other hand, if the wooden lanes have been properly maintained and well-lacquered, then the oil shouldn't be absorbed by them anyway. But old wood lanes are often not-so-well maintained!

They dress the lanes before the leagues in the evenings. Not sure about the mornings though - I've never been there before about 6pm! My league is Monday evenings so I'll give the stand to the right a bit more a go, see what happens.

Cheers for the info though! I like the idea of having 2 bowling balls as well, so I think you may be swayign me with your go for a plastic ball first argument!

Blimy i didn't realise so many people liked Bowling!!!

I used to bowl when i was younger and Was Dorset County Champ when i was 16! I've hit 267 twice which is 11 strikes and an open frame in the middle somewhere :( Quite gutting! Had to quit as a jobless 16 year old can't afford much bowling...lol

There was a competition down in Weymouth about 5 years back where Tim Mack (Yank Champ) Came over and played against some of the youngsters in a competiton and anyone who beat him won a bowling ball...lol!

  • 6 months later...

Sorry to resurrect a really old thread, but I've just posted up some YouTube videos that might be instructional to anyone interested in the sport.

This is the first time I've ever tried to post up any videos anywhere. I think the quality isn't too bad, considering it's from a phone. (Make sure you switch to 'high quality' in YouTube.) I've added some instructional comments to go with the videos that may help any intermediate or near-intermediate players improve their game.

The links are here:

Part 1

Part 2 (This is the best one, I think.)

Part 3

I would have put them into one long video, but my mobile kept timing out, and VirtualDub simply refused to stitch them together.

Any comments welcome!

I'm still going :)

My average has dropped terribly, and my handicap has gone up to 58... so I definitely need to get more practice in, the ball is going in for resurfacing and an adjustment to the holes. I'm having to really fight the ball to crank with a very woolly backend hook. So watch this space, and hopefully I'll be back up to my more normal 160 game.

PS : Awesome vid by the way just watching them now, nice and consistant...me? I'm random as hell :)

Should join us one night at Newbury.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Gav. :)

Your handicap sounds like it's gone up a lot, if you were previously bowling to a 160 average. Bummer. Have you just switched to fingertip? That'll typically set you back 20 pins a game for maybe 12 months.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend forcing it or trying to crank it, though I can certainly sympathise if you've got no backend. At my local bowl, there's been no backend for the last three months as the old machine wasn't stripping, and that's really dented my average... I've gone down about 15 pins in that time. They've just bought a new machine and the lanes are much better again. I'm averaging over 200 since the new machine arrived, but then again... I haven't exactly had many games with it yet!

I'm always happy to lend pointers. :)

My league had a mix up and finished at the end of April instead of the anticipated mid-late July :( And the bowling alley is shutting in October so they're not restarting the league, so I postponed getting a ball in the end. My average settled nicely into the mid 140s by the end of the league.

I'm looking into leagues down Fareham way, but it's quite a trek for a couple of hours bowling each week. If there's something suitable, I'll be investing in a ball and hopefully watching my average sky rocket

Will watch your vids at some point when I'm not about to pass out on my keyboard too.

One lad in my team upped his average by about 30 pins within a month or two of buying his own ball, having never bowled fingertip before. Gave me hope for when I eventually take the plunge!

On the plus side of the alley shutting, the lanes were useless. A lad on my team averaged 160 for our team. At other leagues he's in, he averages 190+, and he's not the only one.

I used to really love bowling. I went a while back and bowled a 160 odd lol. My best is 232, i was a teenager too and only using a size 14 ball (don't know if its lbs or not).

Its actually quite an expensive hobby.

I used to be really into bowling when i was younger playing for the County and Scotland.

Travelled around a lot in UK playing different places.

Played for Dunbartonshire when it was the county but it was based in Cumbernauld.

The scene in Scotland the Glenrothes players featured a lot.

My highest score was 275 i got it in a tournamet in Enfield, and won a wee trophy for it as it was the highest in the tournament.

My average was around 170ish per game cant remember exactly but it was just a little over 12 years ago before i started drinking too much :p

Now when i bowl i dont try too much as my thumb swells up instantly, used to wear skin patches on it because it used to burst a lot.

Still have my 2 balls, shoes amnd bags in the house. My fav was a 12pound Rhino ball in Brown and orange writing. I have an AMF blue ball also with my name on it. Still looks cool

Hey Franko, the Rhino balls certainly were great!

My first ever reactive ball was a Rhino Pro in Teal. The first time I bowled with it was in a tournament at Acocks Green, which I believe was the Midland Junior Open. I bowled my first 600 series there and it was also my first major tournament win. (Sorry, that was a lot of firsts!)Course, that was when I was about 15... Oh my God... I'm double that age now!

I liked that ball so much I ended up having three of them. Alas, they're a bit tame compared to modern balls in terms of coverstock and flare potential. That said, my 290 games have both been bowled using a Rhino Pro and I've never managed a better game with a 'modern' ball.

I have a tip that my help for your thumb-swelling problem. I have the same issue. Get your thumb hole drilled fractionally too big, and then pack out with white tape at the front of the hole (where the pad of your thumb sits) when your thumb is cold. Use as many pieces as required.

As your thumb starts to swell, just start removing the white tape until it's comfortable again. If your thumb swells so much that you stick at the back and the sides, then use BLACK tape at the back and sides as required, as it's very smooth and will aid your release. (And it's very thin, so it wont pack out like white tape does.)

Hopefully you wont need those skin patches again!
