wooooo'ing/resonance noise as 1st turbo spools?

Hello all,

Ive got a noise coming from my car that I cant really diagnose. Its similar to posts that a guy called VIL made. Basically when cold and running a short trip, i get a 'woooooo'ing' type resonance noise that sounds like someone blowing over a bottle top. It can get so loud sometimes you can hear it over the normal 1st turbo whistle.

Any ideas what this is? I dont think its death whine as it happens at a much lower revs than the 3.8k as suggested. The car is also a j-spec...

My old one with a stock bov used to make a lighter noise than this, change the bov no probs.

Scarily, I got the same noise from what I thought was the rear of the car with my foot off the throttle going down a hill!!

Now that is weird. I can get my car to do this but only on one sweeping left hander near my house.

Oddly, my old Volvo would make the exact same noise on a sweeping left hander on the same stretch of road but in the opposite direction and one mile from the first corner I mentioned.

Weird huh?

I'm not very helpful, am I?? :p

So its definately not death whine on a j spec?

One of my colleagues had a similar noise on his 200SX. Then his turbo blew up.

However, before you panic, I've had the whooing noise for two winters now and never in the summer.

Have still got mine!!! Changed the stock BOV (with another stock one) still no difference.

Have even had Phoenix look over it (changed a few pipes) still no difference!!

To be honest its been doing it now for well over a year and have had no performance loss etc, so given up on trying to work it out.

If anyone finds the culprit please let me know.

My only other thought was the exhaust. From memory my noise seemed to start shortly after I had a stainless steel exhaust fitted and the noise does sound like a high pitched ressonance so it could be something to do with exhaust air flow?

I`m probably talking bollox now and should stop ;0)

So its definately not death whine on a j spec?

only the UK's whine, the ceramic impellers on the j-specs usually shatter and fly out the back of your exhaust if your going to lose a turbo :-( which is always nice, so you will soon know one way or another!

I would'nt rule out a boost leak....are you still boosting fully, if not inspect your IC pipes all round as this im 90%sure wil be the cause??

I've had a tingling type noise mixed in with the whine when lifting off at high revs that worries we slightly, used to here a slight wooing noise on damp cold days but not had that for a while.

Sounds like pinking to me....when was your plugs/coil packs last checked?? and what spec are you running

Hi mate, It doesn't really sound like pinking more like a buzzy resonating sound anyway you dont get pinking when lifting off do you?. The car is stock with new coil clips and plugs from Mr T. 10month old at the most. Maybe its just the EGCV resonating.

True, compression det is usually on the power stroke, so I guess its not, do you have a knock sensor installed as this will put rest to this, although its probably not likely to be det anyway

Used mine yesterday on a long run, still doing it now and again. One of the problems is that it does not happen all the time?

Mine happens on spool up of the first turbo (sounds like your blowing across the top of a beer bottle).

The odd thing is that once it starts to make the noise you can hold the sound by not accelerating or de-celerating. But once you do either the noise stops immediately?

Its had me stumped for a year now. Checked for split I/C hoses, even changed a few just just in case, had it at Phoenix etc still no further forward.

If anyone does eventually solve this problem I would love to know what it is.......

That's exactly the 'problem' I have. Cold mornings only though. Didn't go out until lunchtime on Saturday. It'd had warmed up a bit by then. No sound.

Went out yesterday in the V.F. Cold and it did it. Same this morning.

No idea what it is.

I had this exact same noise. Like you describe, blowing over the top of a bottle, sounding like it was coming from the drivers side of the engine bay. This happened a couple of times about a year ago and has not occurred since. The only thing around that time is that my downpipe was blowing and I got that replaced. However, I dont think it was related. Nothing has come from it though.
