shocking....

Anyone had this problem and/or knows why its happening. I have a N/A aerotop auto. Fitted 13 months ago with KYB rear shocks because one of the previous - otherwise good - shocks, decided to strip the thread bare at the top where the big nut holds it in position, ( sorry for the technical jargon! ). 13 months on, its done it again on the same side - offside, totally stripped off the thread and the nut now popping off AAAAaaaahhhh.......... so annoying and expensive. Car is fitted with standard springs at the rear and lowered front, 10" wide wheels with 255/40/17 tyres. I have done only around 4000 miles on the shocks before it shredded. Done it twice now, so any suggestions please. Ta very much. Martin.

Surely it can only be stripping the threads on the top mount nut if the shock is being subjected to excessive rebound forces???

One way I can imagine this happening is if the shock is too short and is reaching the bottom of its travel and putting massive stress on the top mount nut???

Possibly another reason is that the top mount bush was knackered, allowing excessive movement. This would have sounded like a rattle from that corner when going over bumps.... and would eventually get worse until ut stripped the threads.

Guest Morgan

Just read your note.I have a knocking at low speed over uneven roads which seems to come from the rear strut area. I have had two mechanics look for the noise and they have both drawn a blank. Last weekend I had the car on a lift , checked all the bushes and took off the strut and the the damper. Can't see any thing obviously wrong, no leaks from the damper and action seems smooth. The only clue is some metal dust around the strut top nut, (below the strut assembly cap), on the noisy side? Spring bumper is OK.

What do you mean by TOP DAMPER ?

Any help would be appreciated as I have just ordered two new dampers but am not convinced that they are the source of the low speed knocking.

THANKS

Points to a loose or innefective clamping strut top mount allowing the strut to move and the nut to knock on its mount as it re-seats.

Sometimes caused by the use of incorrect parts (I had this in an old VW Passat) or just wear and a failed strut top mount bush.

Re-torquing the nut won't help and I actually snapped the strut :Pling:
