oh well it had to happen. after having a debate with my mom about how ridiculous it is in comparison to other things i get caught! lol

came to a junction on a quiet street and stopped. made a call with the car still stationary but then eased foward a bit just as a police car went past. they turned around, pulled me over and i took it like a man (oooh err). so thats 3 lovely points and a £60 fine.

kept a clean liscence for 8.5 years and then get a possible 6 points,3 garaunteed, within the space of a week!!

the ironic thing is was that i wasnt even meant to be in that place. went to pick up a mate who i had forgotten had told me to pick him up from his girlfriends house lol :D

unlucky mate,:(

i still dont see why it is such a problem while smoking while driving is legal?!?

but lets not start that debate!:D

actually, judging by the wording of the law you could be done for that too.

hopefully Doug will clarify for us :)

Smoking isn't the issue while driving, it is the rolling with my knees on the steering wheel I find problem, especially around Basingstoke with all the roundabouts... :p

You must've missed the Police programme that was on last night.

There was a bloke driving a 7 tonne truck on a dual carriageway, he was fiddling around with the phone that was fitted in the vehicle. He ploughed straight into a line of stationery traffic which was queing to leave at the next junction, he didn't even apply the brakes.

The driver of the car he hit was killed instantly - a 23 year old young lady. Her car was crushed to less than half of it's original length . They showed the traffic policeman going to her home to break the devastating news to her family, her mother answering the door!

I wouldn't mind, but these bluetooth earpiece handsfree star-trek whatsits are actually bloody good. I always swore I'd never get one because everyone I ever saw walking into an office with one on their ear looked like a twat to me.

But I love mine. I never hold the phone to my ear any more. I can work better whilst on the phone now too. Even washing to car today whilst on the phone..

Yeah that was shocking. I am a believer that anyone getting caught on the phone deserve the 3 points and fine.

I also believe that smoking and driving should be banned but like it has been said, that is a seperate issue.

I think it'd be fairer to ban in car audio.

An advert came on the radio the other day. It went something like:

"It's ver. its very diff. very.. its ..cult diff very its diff very. It's very difficult to concentrate on two things at once. Think. Don't use a mobile phone whilst driving"

It struck me as dangerous since it sent my concentration and general brain into a bit of a wobbler. Whilst driving.

LOL :D

That's why I've never bothered getting one.

I just ignore the phone if it rings whilst I'm driving, if it's important they can leave a message.

so anybody know any insurers that are gentle towards people with points? lol

all the quotes im getting are around £200-£300 more with the points of using a mobile. just for the record thats a higher increase than that if i was speeding:blink:

Insurance companies don't usually take much notice of the first 3 points you get for speeding. I guess they take the mobile thing more seriously - I guess it's because the law you're breaking is something like driving without due care and attention?

The thing with smoking, or eating, or drinking a soft drink, or any other actvity whilst driving would come under driver not having proper control of a motor vehicle.

When mobiles 1st became widespread in their usage, that was the legislation used for dealing with drivers using a mobile, but the prosecution have to show how the driver didn't have proper control etc, so it's a harder offence to prove.

Its easier now to prove driving whilst using a mobile, but you can still be done for not in proper control.

With current anti tobacco legislation slowly being introduced, then I would be surprised in future that it will become an offence in it's own right.

I just can't understand what could be so important you need to be on the phone while driving? Just wait until you get to where you're going. When you're driving you should be concentrating on one thing, driving IMHO. Hands free kits are not that much better than a normal mobile I think, you're still distracted.

Disappointed in that comment Squiffy. :( I for one witnessed my brother nearly smashing into a stationary car whilst he was on his phone and I gave him a right bloody kicking.

It's bang out of order - end of.:Pling:

I think that too. In fact I know this probably sounds weird but I'm more distracted when I've got something in my ear.

Anyone who is actually driving properly, and not just following the car infront in a daydream, should realise that any distraction from your concentration on the road is downright dangerous.

I recently re-learned how to drive (properly this time!!) and was absolutely amazed at the level of concentration required to drive safely and make progress...... especially when driving fast.

I now switch my phones off/silent when driving.

Yeah, really bad. And the driver denied it all the way to just before court. As a 'professional' driver he ought to have known better.

Very sad.

Are we still talking about phones here??:D

I sometimes wonder if having a handsfree is just as dangerous. The sight of someone having a mobile to their ear drives me potty tbh. I need to re read Matlee's first post as it sounds like you were stationary at the time of the offence.

I drive about 200 miles a day and almost half of that time I am on the phone. I have a proper kit in my car that turns the stereo down if I get or make a call. I can drive for miles whilst concentrating on the call. You can be almost in a daydream type state and cannot recollect anything of the cars or landmarks you have passed.

On the other hand, when I tried not to use my phone in the car I got absolutely nothing done and stopped for every call I took. Ended up taking an hour to do 10 miles!!:D

H.

Yep, that does sound weird...:D

Maybe it's remembering an era when nobody had mobiles. Or maybe it's because nobody ever phones me. sniff...
