tax a car online question

flukey-lukey

Recommended Posts

I've just started a new insurance policy on a car and need to tax it tomorrow if possible. I don't have the insurance documents as the company said they would be sent out within 3 working days, is it possible for me to tax it online and if so, how do I prove the insurance?

I'm confused :(

I did mine on line and I think they have a record that you are insured as you only need to enter your reg number and MOT number so you should be fine

ok thanks, but will the insurance I've just started show on their records? Policy began yesterday teatime, my dad seems to think it takes a couple of weeks to go through the computer systems?

DVLA update their database weekly. Your insurance probably won't show up until Monday.

ahh, that must have been what my dad was rambling on about :D

So I am insured, but can't buy tax online. I'll just have to wait until the documents come through and do it at the post office. Cheers :)

To tax online, you need the 11 digit document reference number on the bottom left of your log book (also on the front). I think the policy is instant as the DVLA check the insurance records. Therefore you need the policy number of your insurance. Note you can only tax online if all your details are correct ie you are the registered keeper and you address is correct with the DVLA. You will obviously need your MOT. I've just been informed the tax disk can take up to 5 working days (all this info coutesy of my sis who works for the dvla)

Great info, say thanks to your sis :D (is she hot?)

I have the e-mail the insurance company sent me as verification that the policy started. They have given a policy number for the insurance. Will that be acceptable?

If the tax disk takes 5 days to arrive can I still drive the car as it is technically taxed, but not on show?

Apparently not, the police can still pull you over for failure to display.

I believe the policy number is acceptable.

I'll pass on the message to her.

No, you'll commit an offence of failing to display. You must display a current excise licence to use or keep your vehicle on a road.

So in that case it completely pointless me taxing it online, as the insurance documents will arrive before the tax disk would. It would be quicker for me to go to a post office and tax it once the documents are posted out..... *sigh* stupid tax laws
