yesterday was the first time i took the car on the motorway, as i hit 60 the ecu engine light came on. now i didnt notice any change in the way the car drove or anything the only thing i found strange was i was belting along at 70 at 3000 revs with the engine sounding like it wanted a 6th gear  is that normal???

any ideas of the possiable cause for the light to come on???

If it is speed related, then it could be that the stock auto front spoiler has been removed. Do you have the button for the auto spoiler, try turning it off and see if you still get the warning triangle.

If it's not that it may be a dodgy kmh/mph speedo conversion.

Sounds speed sensor related. If you do the diagnostics check as per Nics link, you will most likely get a 42 error code.

If your car is an import (which I believe it is) and its speedo is reading MPH instead of KMH then it will have a speed converter either in the passenger footwell where the ECU is or behind your dials. It could be a knackered one like Nic suggested.

Alternatively, it could be a faulty Odometer. Does your milage/tripometer still increment?

It could also be related to the Active Spoiler as Nic has mentioned, or a loose speed-related wire to the ECU in the passenger footrest.

A search for "Code 42" will give you plenty of reading materials and causes/solutions.

The light you're getting on the dash is the 'check engine' light, meaning that it has detected an engine fault. Could be any of the sensors that has picked up a fault, so you'll need to do the fault code check as Nic said.

Why it happened at 60 on the motorway????? Could be just that the fault is only seen by the ECU at higher loads and that it has to exist for a certain length of time to set the fault?

hi nic, no i have a manual 5speed N/A, as for the speedo convertion i have no idea mate

Time you take it to a professional to have a look at it then.

It sounds speed related, probably a dodgy speed converter OR a dody installation of a speed converter.

I had the same problem on mine @60MPH or 3K RPM's

The top speed de-limiter is a red wire on the ecu (PAssengers foot plate) Un plug the bullet connector to totally eliminate it.

Then remove your dash and locate a set of wires connecting to the back of the speedo Think it's Negative & Positive

Then on ebay they sell a 110MPH speedo face (About a tenner)

Then wire the aftermarket KPH to MPH into the trip computer

and all should work ok....That's what i did anyway on my 1995 J spec.:D

Does your power steering seem very light and twitchy at speeds over 50 ish??

Or buy a decent speed convertor/de-limiter...

Disclaimer....This is fact but only what i learned from my car
