Starting problem - alarm or ignition barrel?

A few weeks ago my car just clicked when I tried to start it. Turned the key back, tried again, started. Didn't think anymore of it.

However, it's since done it more and more, culminating in the car not wanting to start at all the other day. Just a big click whenever I turned the key. Set the alarm, disarmed it again, then tried and it started as normal.

Tonight it did the same thing, so I turned the key right back to the start (but didn't remove it), then turned it round and it started okay.

Is this an alarm or ignition barrel problem... or something else?

I had a similar problem last night in mine, I hadnt used it for 3 weeks (not unusual), I went to start it and all I got was a fast repeating clicking sound. All the lights were on, the fan and windows seemed to operate at normal speed so I thought it couldnt be the battery.

Now this had me shitting bricks as im off around northern europe in it at the weekend.

After a quick search on here, I tried a jump start which did the trick. Then I went out and got a new battery and now its all fine again.

Changing the starter motor isn't rocket science, but it's usually a darn sight easier on a ramp :)

Saying that it wouldn't be a job that I'd pay to get done. If you put it on axle stands you could get under and change it yourself.
