Blue smoke over 4000rpm

I have noticed over the last several weeks that I am getting a blue smoke when accelerating hard over 4000rpm. On start up in a morning I get a bit of white smoke but this dissappears after a few hundred yards (condensation?) All other times the car is fine.

I changed the oil and filter 2 weeks ago and the problem seems to be getting worse. Am I correct in thinking that the oil seal in the 2nd tubby is the cause and not valve stem seals? If so what route would you advise me to go.

Sounds like your self diagnosis is right I'm afraid. Are you decatted??? This can cause a weak seal to start to leak.

Did you change to a low viscosity synthetic oil from a high viscosity non-synthetic??

Only real option is to rebuild the turbo as it is a piston ring type seal. Once it starts it will carry on. Its possible a thicker oil will reduce this a little and put off the inevitable.

no froth found in oil or rad

I used the same oil 10/ 50 synthectic as I have done for every oil change (approx 3000 to 4000 miles max between changes) both cats still in place.

Any recommendations where I could get the tubbies rebuilt and approx price?

Try a turbo specialist, Turbo Technics or Turbo Dynamics, had both of mine done and think it was around £1000 for both, but cant remember of the top of my head as was a while back.

Well you got ripped off then James mate. :p

Turbofit have quoted me 6 hours labour (about £300) to strip and replace the hybrids I currently have, run them down to Turbotechnics and have the oil seals replaced for £295. These should also be covered by warranty from Envy as they were only fitted in May last year.

thanks guys for confirming my worse fears. I will make enquiries next week on the options I have.

I think I will get pissed before I tell the misses, that way I won't feel the pain as much when she batters me.

Good luck Mickey. I'd give Turbofit a ring as they'll be able to sort you out nor probs. Alternatively, you could pick up a set of low mileage J-spe tubbies quite easily now for £250-£300, I think Kopite is selling some and have those fitted. Maybe a cheaper option..............maybe. ;)

Sorry Greg forgot to point out that included the labour of removing the tubs and replacing them back after refurb. I take it you prices you quotes was for both tubs..? If yeah looks like I got taken for a mug, but that was with a certain ex-trader so not suprised and really cant be sure half the work was even done..! lol

Hi mate,

Yeah buddy, both tubbies. Turbofit are obviously bang on in terms of both service and pricing. ;) I reckon it will be circa £600 inc Labour and Rebuild :D

No guesses who the trader who screwed you over was matey!

At least it's all sorted now though pal. :)
