Foz
Hi all, My TT MKIV Auto Supra Import has just had a service and ive been told it needs new discs n pads on the front. So im looking to replace/upgrade the standard import ones what are on there but im not sure which ones to get? Can anyone offer any better replacements? I have at times notice my car doesnt brake too well and i not sure if its the standard import discs/brakes as ive heard that these are fit for the job? any help would be great thanks. I have at times notice my car doesnt brake too well and i not sure if its the standard import discs/brakes as ive heard that these are fit for the job? The std Jspec brakes are ok as long as you're a cruiser rather than a racer You have three options to uprate the brakes, and some nice add on improvements while you're at it. Stick with Jspec (£).... Go large with Uk spec (££) or supersize with an aftermarket big brake kit (££££). To start with make sure whichever discs you buy are good quality. You can't go wrong with Toyota parts (Steve Manley is the club's Toyota friendly parts guy that gives good discounts). If you fancy going for grooved discs (drilled are not a great idea as the drilled holes can crack) go for one with as few grooves as possible. Something like 3G or Rotora are good. If you want a mild to moderate upgrade than stick with the Jspec calipers and discs (grooved if you like) and go for fast road pads. I have Chris Wilson pads, but there's other good ones available such as Portfield and Hawk. Search on here for ideas and opinions. Some also say that EBC Redstuff aren't as bad as they used to be!! The next step up is UK spec brakes. These are 4 pot fixed calipers at the front rather than the Jspec 2 pot sliding calipers. Fit these with uprated pads too and you'll be stopping with a lot more confidence. You need to change the discs too (as they're bigger) and they have problems clearing a lot of 17" wheels (the std Toyota 17" wheels are ok). There is a measurement somewhere on here to check if they'll clear your wheels. Most people agree that if you fit the UK fronts then UK rears are a good idea as well to ensure brake balance is correct. The UK rears are 2 pot rather than the Jspec single pot sliding caliper. The next stage is a big brake kit such as Brembo, AP or KAD. These kits are ££££££ and IMHO a UK setup will be good enough for most of us There are some nice touches to be done while you're at it, and they cost peanuts compared to the brakes themselves. Get a good fluid, Dot 5.1 is top spec. Motul is recommended. Also Aeroquip stainless brake lines improve brake feel (and never perish). Can be had for £45 on Fleabay. A brake cylinder stopper can reduce bulkhead flex when you stamp on the anchors, resulting in better brake feel and more responsive brakes. Again cheap money on Fleabay and looks bling under the bonnet! I think that's got it covered?!

Aftermarket discs will make a negligible difference to stopping power and they are not cheap. A set of quality fast road pads and some decent brake fluid will give you a good improvement for much less money. I would either replace with OEM discs and a set of TRD pads, or take the opportunity to upgrade to the larger spec Supra brakes. If this post wasn't in the Tech section, I'd be able to mention that I have all of the above in stock, but I won't as the mods may be watching
Foz
Great, thanks for the info guys, anyone know how much it would cost to upgrade to the UK Spec brakes at all?
Kranz
A complete setup with fronts & rear calipers, used discs & pads go for between £400 and £550 gepending on the newness & spec of the discs & pads. Search the for sale section for UK brakes to get a feel for the price. Also look on Fleabay for supra brakes, there's some on there at the moment I think?
