Mike_Mac
In all fairness if some nugget opens their door on you without warning there's not much you can do. On the other hand there's no defence for the dozy bird in the Honda!

tbourner
I always try and give a bit of space when going past parked cars, I know there are some idiots about who don't check before opening the door!!
Gerry
All women driver's are not ar**holes you know Agreed Although........ A friend of mine's dad once gave me this good advice about lady drivers: If you are following a lady driver and she signals to turn right, and then she puts her arm out of the window as well to signal she's turning right. There's only one thing you can be certain of... : : : : : : : : : The window's open....
Jake
That happened to my Dad once. The person in the parked car opened their door and we hit it. As it happened the police were just across the road and came over but they reckoned it was my dad's fault because he hadn't left enough room to allow for someone opening the door! That's never right, is it?
Kittyclaws
A good friend of ours (female) went on a advanced driving course run by the police. they told her that when overtaking a car in front, always check to see who is driving, if it is a woman, make sure you have got plenty of room and some poke under the bonnet, because 9.9 times out of 10, they will put their foot down in order to stop you overtaking. Kranz
I just p*ss myself laughing every time I see that motorway clip on police camera action where the driver on the hard shoulder opens his door just as a tank transporter is passing. I think it says somewhere in the highway code that you have to leave room etc, but yes, it is wrong.

KaoriFan
when i learnt to drive, i was taught by a guy who teaches advanced driving as well, and also has worked with the Police regarding driving instruction (he is a good guy, not an actual police officer). He told me the following: parked cars - always leave a doors width if you see someone in the parked vehicle, just in case cyclists - leave 6ft of 'wobbling' space in the event they fall off the bike. KaoriFan
Carpark for women lol, thats very true, and just like the women picking up their kids from school in the afternoon. do they ever check mirrors, and why do they open doors when you are driving around them. Kittyclaws
also found this one, bit slow at first but worth the wait (happens at around 40 seconds) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzlCttVu57E

Big Ads
In most situations tho it’s just completely impractical to leave a decent size "door" gap between you and the parked cars. I mean you could, but you would inadvertently have a head on collision with a car coming the other way!!

That's never right, is it? Yes this is very ture! If you are driving you are supposed to leave enough room for the car door to be opened fully. If you dont and hit it when someone opens it, its your fault.

Carpark for women I passed a woman in a micra the other day, she braked instead...I only had about half a mile of open road to complete my manoeuvre in Talk to a psychologist about this kind of thing and they'll probably say something about women having less spatial awareness than men (in general) so are very timid about making such manoeuvres because they can't judge them properly, so they also don't like others doing it...hence the blocking quoted above, or the braking I described.
