Ian W
problem no.2 with my audi 80 guys. basically, the needle on the temp guage doesn't usually move at all unless sat in heavy traffic in which case it doesn't go up any further than approx 20% up the guage. the thermostat was just replaced but apparently the mechanic told my dad that although the needle now moves, it doesn't go to normal operating temp. any ideas what else it could be? cheers Ian

geoffvalenti
Probably the temp sender unit screwed into the block
Ian W
Probably the temp sender unit screwed into the block is this not the thermostat? i'm fairly sure this is what was replaced (apologies if thermostat is totally different, just got my terminology mixed up)
SUPRALOOPY
Try repalcing the sender unit for the gauge. It will be located by the thermostat housing or close by in the head.. normaly a single wire goes to them.

Hi Dave, thanks for the suggestion. apologies for my stupidity but, is there a temperature sender AND a thermostat then? my heating has been fine the whole time so if the thermostat controls that too then there's certainly nothing wrong with that. confused as ever
