pistonbroke
Jumped in my car this afternoon, started her up, put her into D and I hear a faint rattle from underneath the car. Then stopped, engaged N and the rattle stopped. Opened the door to see if I could hear it but nothing. Engaged reverse with foot on brake and the rattle returns, if I hold my foot on the brake and raise the revs slightly the rattle gets worse with engine revs. Its a mettalicy rattle much like a heat shield. thing that worries me though is that it stops when the car is warmed up. Could this still be a heat sheild on the exhaust if it only does it when cold? I'm just worried it could be something to do with the torque convertor, though I have had the fluid changed about a month ago. All levels are fine. Super
I've got this problem at the moment and a friend is adament that its the cover under the 2nd cat. I will have a go at ripping it off and prey that the cat doesnt fall apart. If it does then its a good enough excuse to get a 2nd decat to piss the neighbours off even more. Guest Morgan
I have the same problem, when engine cold/idling. Had her up on a lift yesterday and its the exhaust heat shield ( it moves ) just about under your legs. It's just bolted on. I have tried the high tech solution of hitting it with a rubber hammer , but i will have to take off and look at packing it. Good luck
hadyn
I get this too. Do you notice more at low speeds or with it in 1st in manu mode? Morgan are you talking about the heatshield that is bolted onto the underside of the car or the cat pipes?
Mike_Mac
I had the exact same rattle and it is the Cat heat-shield. As posted previously it only tended to do it when cold or reversing. All that was required was to fill the gap between the heat-shield and the pipe with heat-resistant hardening paste. Once this cured it stopped the rattle, which has been gone since then! pistonbroke
Yeah, forgot about this post, mine is the second cat heatsheild.
hadyn
Always thought it was the heatshield on mine too. Thing is it only seems to happen in 1st/2nd gear on my auto and only upto around 3k rpm. Wind the windows down and you can hear it...
Robert
I have a rattle and thought it was a heat shield but i ripped them all off and it seems to be comming from the auto box, maybe the TC bolts, so will be stripping it down next week, just thought it might be worth some of you guys checking the auto box aswell. Its important to say the box shifts fine and there are no problems mechanically but the noise is comming from there.
pistonbroke
well, I replicated the rattle by lightly hitting the pipe with my fist, yet if i put my hand around the heatsheild holding them, the rattle goes away

hadyn
so a 2nd decat would solve this rattle?
pistonbroke
so a 2nd decat would solve this rattle? I thought about this idea too About the torque convertor bolts, hmmm, never heard of that one. Have you checked the little metal plate/link between the bell housing and the first CAT. While searching around for possible rattle causes, I came across this one a couple of times, apparently it snaps when the engine twists through torque and causes a rattle around the front of the gearbox. It would probably sound like it was coming from the torque convertor area. I thought I would suggest this before you spend £££ taking out the box
