Engine rebuilders in/ around manchester?

It depends Mate, The most expensive is not always the best, luckily for Cookci, its an NA so less to go wrong... Head gasket is fairly straight forward without Turbos...

Well with Chris at leats you know its done right, with some other garage, who knows? If I had a pound for every person who's 'gone cheap' and regretted it later...

Agree on the HG part, it'll be a lot eaiser than on the TT, but if it cracked then its near scrap anyway.

I am expensive, but I don't want to do jobs like this twice, so I won't cut corners. It's always cheaper to fit a KNOWN good engine complete than *ugger about wondering if the head is cracked when fixing a weird overheating problem. I have never, ever, found these jobs are "just swap the engine", there are ALWAYS gotchas, stripped threads, hardened hoses, blah blah. Those that quote cheap tend to ignore these sorts of things as they have quoted too low, in my experience at least, and I get to put right quite a lot of bargain jobs :)

I have never seen a cracked one myself.

Agreed. Cracked heads are mormally due to bad core positioning during the casting process, or bad design with thin metal at high stress areas, also poor quality castings with dirt or air inclusions can cause cracks.

I doubt Toyota would have produced sub standard heads ;) More like Rover to do that :D

The head can warp though, especially if its an ally head on a cast iron block. Too much warp = a head gasket sealing face that's not flat = no seal when reasembled. It can be machined but only to a certain limit as the cam bores need to be straight too. Also compression ratio is greatly affected.
