cookci
does anyone know of any? Prefably one that can take the engine out for me too!
jamesmark
What about Chris Wilson? does he not do that sort of thing?
Homer
Yep, Chris Wilson for sure. Can't see why you'd go to anyone else considering your location
JODY T
I think Chris is out of his price range...
Homer
I think Chris is out of his price range... Bought the wrong car then... You Pay Cheap, You Pay Twice.
JODY T
It depends Mate, The most expensive is not always the best, luckily for Cookci, its an NA so less to go wrong... Head gasket is fairly straight forward without Turbos...

If I had a pound for every person who's 'gone cheap' and regretted it later... Agree on the HG part, it'll be a lot eaiser than on the TT, but if it cracked then its near scrap anyway. Chris Wilson
I am expensive, but I don't want to do jobs like this twice, so I won't cut corners. It's always cheaper to fit a KNOWN good engine complete than *ugger about wondering if the head is cracked when fixing a weird overheating problem. I have never, ever, found these jobs are "just swap the engine", there are ALWAYS gotchas, stripped threads, hardened hoses, blah blah. Those that quote cheap tend to ignore these sorts of things as they have quoted too low, in my experience at least, and I get to put right quite a lot of bargain jobs
JustGav
Chris, been reading the other thread and I see now where the engine swap idea is from. Out of interest, how often do the 2JZ heads crack? More out of interest than anything else.
grahamc
If you are going to be spending that much much, why not look at a TT engine swap??

Kranz
I have never seen a cracked one myself. Agreed. Cracked heads are mormally due to bad core positioning during the casting process, or bad design with thin metal at high stress areas, also poor quality castings with dirt or air inclusions can cause cracks. I doubt Toyota would have produced sub standard heads More like Rover to do that The head can warp though, especially if its an ally head on a cast iron block. Too much warp = a head gasket sealing face that's not flat = no seal when reasembled. It can be machined but only to a certain limit as the cam bores need to be straight too. Also compression ratio is greatly affected.

ManwithSupra
Chris how much do you charge then for a TT engine rebuild?
Chris Wilson
Chris how much do you charge then for a TT engine rebuild? Depends entirely on what needs doing and the state of the core unit. invariably a good used engine is cheapest to get a stock car back on the road. A performance build is anything form 4K to 30K
