grahamc
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/03/05/nsamurai105.xml This is utter HORSE S*!T!!! Brought my attention by a work collegue... How can they say that because of some morons running around with these things, BAN them all. A car is more dangerous than a sword, and licenses are handed over to pretty much anyone! Rant over, for now...

Gaz Walker
Doesn't say ban them all - it says genuine art collectors and martial arts enthusiasts are exempt? Gaz.
grahamc
what about people that used to belong to a martial arts group, but no longer do?? like me... I used to train with them. Supragal
I duno, I've met some proper d1ck heads with them, they could well do with removing them. Far more dangerous than a car in some ways when you consider that you can't carry a car around with you or hang it on your wall then get drunk and angry, and in fact have to take a licence to be allowed one. KaoriFan
any idea how you can prove you are a genuine collector or martial arts enthusiast, if you don't belong to a club etc. i am deeply into studying Japanese history and culture from the Taira and Minamoto of the Heian period, through the Kamakura Bafuku to the Tokugawa Bafuku and finally to the Meiji restoration. I was hoping to import various items but now will have to wait and see what happens with another draconian law this country is gonna get. seems they can ban guns, but never really cut gun crime. now swords, which wont stop a thing, can you still buy broadswords etc. wonder if cars will be next, after all speeding/drunk motorist kills someone, have to ban cars then (sarcastic). oh well, ja ne Ian

All 4 kids got killed when she crashed and 2 of them were her own.

grahamc
"Collectors and martial arts enthusiasts owning or using genuine samurai swords would be exepmt from the ban" phew.. Do you own a genuine samurai sword, as in, made by one of the official swordsmiths in Japan??? The last time I checked, there were around 200+ people that can official make these swords and general value of them is thousands of £££s. carl0s
You could make a very offensive weapon out of a piece of metal in next to no time. I can't see how this helps Might stop teenagers having easy access to them, that's about it.
neil tt
Didn't they do something very similar with hand guns, and will you belive it there are now more guns on the street, and banning legitimate owners from keeping them had no effect what so ever:soap:

RedM
I wouldn't sweat this too much. Within Iai circles we've been aware of the ban for more than a year. The BKA are working with all parties to ensure that the ban (should it happen) will not affect Iaidoka and it is hoped that, by extension, other martial arts that require their use will be exempt too. razza
you might as well ban kitchen knives then, because they're used in attacks much more often than samurai swords...back to plastic knives and forks we go...
Guest Geneb
they should ban them i was attacked by some pissed up dick with one 16 years ago ,i have over 12" of scars up my arm. collectors with license only i say
Terminator
So if I am being hacked to bits by some wielding one of these, if he is a collector I should feel better about it???? No way are they getting their hands on my dress sword. If someone is intent using a large blade as a weapon, there are no laws that will stop them. RedM
So if I am being hacked to bits by some wielding one of these, if he is a collector I should feel better about it???? A true collector or a practitioner of the martial arts would be the last person to attack you with a sharp object. I'd be more concerned about the violent Chav types who carry knives around. sdavies
Silly IMO. Wonder if they will make me surrender my ornamental ones (they aren't sharp and if you brought them to bare with any force would likely snap at the handle lol - I was made to sign a register when I bought them though!). Hmm... they would poke pretty well I guess If a nutter hasn't got a sword to hand to go out on a maiming rampage, then they will find something else nasty to go on a rampage with (plank of wood with some nails banged into it? Kitchen knife? Garden Sheers? Scythe? A big metal pole? Stanley Knife?). People have been maimed and killed with screwdrivers and car/house keys. Do you ban them? I wonder how many people have died to being twatted on the back of the head with a house brick!? Knee jerk nanny state. Of course anybody that has been on the wrong end of one will have other words to say about it (I guess that would colour anyones opinions). In all fairness you should have to be a member of some form of martial arts club or be a registered collector, and have the same amount of screening that people who own shotguns get before you are allowed. Didn't help with gun crime one iota when the powers at be started banning legitimate owners from having hand guns - clueless - its not the legal/legit ones causing the problems - hopeless legislation. But I've done very little martial arts, and am not a member of any clubs or associations. I bought the swords (1 Daisho set, 1 Ninja style sword, a full length replica polearm, a cavalry type sword, several display knives) for their aesthetic value. I very rarely get them out of their scabbards, certainly would never take them out of the house. Why should they be taken away from me? I also have replica guns though and they didn't get them so I suppose I shouldn't worry too much.
razza
a gun does not kill, the person shooting you does.... anything can be a weapon if you want it to be, whether it's original design was meant for that or not, nunchuku used to be simple rice flails back in yonder years.... if someone went nuts with a bat, be it cricket or baseball, and caved the heads in of several people, would they ban cricket? would they b0ll0cks!! You have to sort out society first, trying to stop people owning things is not going to make a big difference, if they want a certain weapon, they'll get it. banning handguns, hmmmm, funny that, gun crime's got worse, so they're getting them from somewhere...
