CJ
I have moved offices and now have to travel around 90 miles per day with no petrol allowance Obviously, using a Supra would be rather silly so i am thinking of getting a diesel car. I initially thought of one of those little Smart things but, as my son pointed out, I am such a large chap I would probably look like Big ears driving around in it Any other suggestions? Oh, and I don't want to spend any more than £3000
Daston
I would say a 306 TDI would be a good bet however the downside is their french

merckx
Nice mondeo, full service history. I don't know if you've ever driven one of these , they're very nice and well built. The mondeo was the class leading car. http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www/CARS_popup.asp?searchform=&modelexact=1&lid=search_used_cars_full&photo=1&state=none&sort=3&hassearched=Y&make=FORD&min_pr=3000&source=1&model=MONDEO&max_pr=4000&miles=1500&agerange=&mileage=&postcode=ne31+2et&variant=&bodyid=0&trim=&fuelid=0&colour=&transmissionid=0&keywords=&ukcarsearch_full.x=26&ukcarsearch_full.y=11&start=5&distance=272&adcategory=CARS&channel=CARS&id=200710273657162
DaveK
I know somebody who runs an old Audi diesel and swears by it. It's got about a zillion miles on it and still sails through the MOT every year.

My wife has a BMW 320d and that is really quick and does over 50 mpg. She fills it up every 6 weeks!! The Audi is a good engine too!! H. DaveK
Some of the new BMWs (which are not in CJs budget unless he pays someone £3K to nick one for him) are amazing. A diesel estate gave me a hell of a shock when I was in the 964 a few months ago.
Konrad
Mondeo is prolly best choice CJ - it is comfortable, big, nice mpg and kinda quick for his class

Would it? Taking into account the £3K you'll spend on the car plus the cost of MOT, tax, insurance and maintenance you could easily spend that on the extra fuel cost of driving the Supra as a main car. I was going to buy a diesel runabout but after doing the maths I was still better off running the Supe as my daily driver. Remember unless you SORN for 6 months or whatever, you still need to pay tax, insurance, MOT etc for the Supe for a full year.

Did this include depreciation due to the mileage? 90 miles a day is almost 2K per month, and people don't like buying high mileage cars - especially not sports cars. Havard
Come on CJ, give us a wish list and I'll find you a car!! Love looking for cars, explains why it took me so long to find a Supe!! H.

Now things get complicated. Easy remedy but very immoral! You could always do what a mate of mine does - disconnect the speedo. May affect something else if the ECU relies on it. Kranz
I'd go for this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2003-VOLKSWAGEN-PASSAT-DIESEL-SALOON-1-9-SE-TDI-130-4dr_W0QQitemZ120094341962QQihZ002QQcategoryZ9873QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item120094341962 Only £2300 at the moment and good for 130 mph. Handles superb but rides like an arm chair! Edit: Forget that! Just found this baby.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2000-V-Mercedes-Benz-C250-Sport-Turbo-Diesel-Mint_W0QQitemZ140091509586QQihZ004QQcategoryZ9855QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item140091509586

steve0
why not not a laguna 1.9 dti i thought about 1 one of them until i get another car they start from 1000 upwards 55mpg im sure they must be comfy
Faye
I love my mondeo, but I have the juicy 2.5. I also used to have the Mk1 TD mondeo which was a horrific car, so if you're going diesel on the mondeo make sure you go for the mk3 onwards as they as I understand are a bit more gutsy.
