IanC or others: Please recommend me some good Sci-Fi books.

Ian or anyone else.

I know you read Sci-Fi. What should I be checking out? I recently picked up Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks and I'm loving it. I've previously read some Greg Bear stuff but that's about it for Sci-Fi. I usually read cult author type stuff, Palahniuk, Copeland and the like.

Many thanks,

Martin

If you like the Ian M Banks books then may I suggest any by the following:

Neal Asher (Polity series of books)

Alistair Reynolds (My all time fav)

Richard Morgan

Cheers Homer. Those Polity books look right up my street.

Freaky - I was about to recommend Reynolds and Morgan too.

If you're like me, and always want to read series in chronological order, Reynold's first book is Revelation Space, and Morgan's first is Altered Carbon. I can recommend both series.

Also, if you like space opera, then Kevin J Anderson's 'Saga Of The Seven Suns' is keeping me entertained.

Charles Stross. I read Accelerando (available as a free e-book http://www.accelerando.org/) some time ago and loved that, while looking up quite a few terms on wikipedia though (Dyson sphere's aren't anything to do with vacuum cleaners apparently). I also read Singularity Sky recently and enjoyed that and now have the follow up, Iron Sunrise, to read.

All of the technology he writes about is based on genuine theorised stuff (dyson sphere's, alcubierre drives etc) which I think makes it all the more interesting. It's not all completely serious stuff though, there's Sentient Russian Lobsters in Accelerando and killer mimes in Singularity Sky :D
