chilly
Having looked int Supras quite a lot( i've got no technical idea), i decided to buy a 95 n/a. I read lots of information saying they were pretty much bullet proof. Having spent about £2000 recently on trying to ensure the longevity of the car, i'm now experiencing what appears to be suspension problems(knocking noise from the rear, near side wheel arch clearance worse than off side). Having looked at archived threads, the solution would seem as difficult as finding Osama Bin Laden at a Elton John gig. I'm starting to loose faith, someone please release me from the demons... i dont want to return to family car anonimity. When not costing me money, the Supra brings me a smile bigger than a pornstars crack!!!
michael
Things wear out on old cars, it's a fact of life - a 12 year old car is bound to need things replacing unfortunately.
chilly
i knew it would be a gamble, i had an Alfa before and that was dull as fook. The Soop is great to look at and usually a dream to drive, all the bills seem to come at once though.
RedM
Things wear out on old cars, it's a fact of life - a 12 year old car is bound to need things replacing unfortunately. Tell me about it. I bought a Supra and planned to go BPU. Instead of that I've replaced coil packs, SMIC and a wheel bearing. I have a viscous fan and autobox to replace and I need new shocks and suspension bushes. The stem seals need replacing as well. BPU will have to wait.
chilly
Mate i've heard the term BPU mentioned loads, what the hell does it stand for? Iwas feeling quite pissed off, but just been outside for a smoke(even in my own house the rules still apply) and looked at the Soop, i was going to get rid for a 4 x 4 but she looks lovely! D8MOA
diffrence with a supra over a ford, vauxhall for example in the space you have the supra parts may need changine but only once! in the space of 1 year a ford will need 3 sets of lower arms etc

Pot
Dude, sounds like you've done the right thing in looking after the car, but as an NA owner, things do wear out and go!... I've just replaced the entire clutch system, and found a few more things... But compared to my old calibra, the issues do not happen nearly as much... And I rag the fuck out of my Sup so it's not a bubblewrapped princess... Yes the bits cost more, and may be harder to fit, but in the fun I've had so far in my Sup, I'd have killed 3 calibras, yes, they're cheaper to drop a lump in but you won't have had as much fun... chilly
I bought my n/a a year ago for £6500 from a dealer. it was in great nick, however i decided to spend a bit of money(my thinking was if i sell it i get more for it). However i understand theres been a crash in the prices and now i will get fook all. I sold ny previous car at a loss to get a soop, and it would seem i'm doing the same again. Its the only car i've had where i'm completly enjoying driving. I just wished i'd gone turbo!!

chilly
Pot. If you had the wedge would you go for a Turbo? Do you relize you look like one of the fellas from East 17? Do you go to any of the meets, and if so do you get bullyed by the rich turbo techno heads?
chilly
Pot, I see you got a silver dash. I just got mine re-furbed white. it looks like a storm trooper, i need to invest in some aluminium.
Pete
Think of it this way, it'll handle great after replacing the tired old suspension!
Sheefa
As above they cost time and money as they're older cars, but bloody strong none-the-less. I could of got a small single now, or near to it, but instead I've had to replace the FMIC, Radiator, Crank Damper, repair vandal damage, full service, turbo repair .... .... etc etc. But hey, she still brings a fantastic smile to my face every time I drive her. toyotasuprauk
This is also what’s helping drive the value of the cars down. Reliability is a big worry for a lot of people, and as we know even with Steve Manley the parts aren’t cheap! Thankfully in general even the oldest Supra’s are extremely reliable cars, as are all Toyota’s. I would never buy a 12 year old French car or in fact know I think about it I don’t think I’d buy anything this old that wasn’t Japanese.
Sheefa
Ah - but some was self inflicted though wasn't it Greg? Oh indeed The Rad was on it's way out though and the crank damper was already in pieces. Plus, after that experience, RLTC was a necessity! Eeven still though Pete, still having boost troubles, problems with turbos etc etc. Not saying it isn't reliable, it just needs steady maintenance and part replacement
Pete
I think you've been fairly unlucky to be honest. I don't think it's the norm to have as many issues as you've had.

Even if you spend loads on it you'll never get the money back, unless you do all the work yourself to save on the labour charges.
Bob
I dread to think what labour would have cost me so far with my TT. I've replaced the turbos and valve stem seals as the two biggest jobs so far - neither of which would be cheap at a garage!
Snooze
I've had my '93 J-Spec TT6 supe for about 18 months now. It's had a thorough service up at Phoenix each 6 months and.... ...that's it. Apart from an alarm problem (which was an aftermarket unit anyhow), no issues at all here. Car is running lovely!
