fishman
Once again our main desktop pc has broken Every time i turn it on it comes up with "the amount of system memory has changed", "clik F1 to continue", so i click F1, then it comes uo with a whole load of choices like: start windows in : "safe mode", "last known settings that work" and "start windows normally" What ever one i click on, windows loads for about 1-2 seconds, i then get a blue screen with writing on i cant read caus it only appears for 1 second, and then the whole PC restarts. I am really annoyed caus this has happened a few times, but not this bad. Does anyone have any ideas on what i can do ??? btw- it runs windows xp home Thanks for any help. DamanC
Probably fauty memory fella. Take one stick out (if you have 2 sticks). Test it, if it does it again, take the other stick out and put the other one back in.

charlton
sounds like a memory dump to me - had the same issue with a computer at work the other day - Have you heard of Winternals or ERD? its a disk that can recover system files and stop the error if the above ways do not help

Sheefa
Ah, the BSOD! So, Windows won't even load in Safe Mode? Not good mate. Can you enter the Bios by hitting Delete/F1 or another key specified at startup? If so, set you primary boot drive to CD Rom and pop in the XP Home CD or better still the restore one, and choose the system restore option. If not the 6 floppy disks will work and enable you to 'restore' previous settings although this certainy isn't easy. If possible, I'd go for a HDD out, copy files onto another PC and reformat. However, I think you're glitch is more technical so before any of the above I'd test you memory. How much do you have in? One stick or two? Try removing one of the sticks, loading up to see if it works and vice-versa with the other memory stick to eliminate a fault there. If this isn't the case, possible graphics error. With the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) you should get an error code. Can you post it up here?
tbourner
Windows is weird, I've 'mended' a few by rebooting a few times - usually blue screen loop isn't a good sign though.

Sheefa
Try the memory first Fishman. This should certainly rule out the problem if it doesn't work. Bios option won't stay there for more than a few secs anyway mate.
charlton
Soz no havent heard of it We use it at work and its a saviour when the Blue screen appears, I think its quite expensive to buy but is worth its weight in gold (which wont be a lot as its only a CD :d )
fishman
With the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) you should get an error code. Can you post it up here? this is what i got, dont know if this will help: "memory write/read failure at 17c2055c, read c22cc22d expecting c22cc22d, Blue screen says: Stop: 0x00000024 (0x001902fe, 0xf8aed80c, 0xf8aed500, 0xf85561fc) Ntfs.sys.- address f85561fc base at f854900000 datestamp 41107 ee9 As at the top it says memory failure, i presume its got something to do with the sticks, when i ordered the PC i got more memory so i've most probably got 2 sticks, so ill try removing one. Thanks Hi Fish, Yep, deffo a memory RAM failure. Do you know what memory you have installed? Is it a custom built PC or fully built when purchased? I'll try and help you source some new correct memory for your spec, but make sure you do the above test first mate. Good luck. Greg

DamanC
Pull one out. Turn on PC Does it boot? If yes then put that memeroty stick in your hand in the bin. If it doesnt put the one in your hand back in the pc and take the other out and try to boot it. Some PC's are fussy when only one stick is installed, you want to make sure the stick is installed to the lowest number DIMM slot (IE DIMM 1 or maybe even 0)
fishman
how much do sticks cost, and will i lose any files?
DamanC
Depends on their size. If you take one out and measure them and post you findings here i could tell you. I need the height and width but not the thickness You will loose no files at all
