Drag questions for beginners

I'm going drag racing at Thorney Island next weekend but I've never done any drag racing in a car before.

I was planning on putting on some stock rear 17'' wheels with 255 section tyres but what pressure to run them at? It's best to run a bit lower pressure for drag racing isn't it? So how does 25psi sound?

The other question, does anyone know where I can get some Cool Blue or Toulene from before the weekend? I'm in Portsmouth Hants so I can't go up to Chris Wilson's. I wonder if there's anywhere I can order CB or Toulene and have it delivered (I doubt it though)

you will probably beable to buy at drag strip, seems to be same price all over £79 for 25l or £39 for 25l if i remember. john bought some at a trade stand at roto stock.

where is thorney island?

Thanks Mark

£79 for 25l or £39 for 25l ? I'll have the £39 for 25Ltrs then! :moo:

Thorney Island is very near Portsmouth, a bit far for you Hovis boys. Exact location can be found from the link I posted in this thread.

£39 for 10l

good luck, let us know your time when you get back then will put up your base time

have fun

i normally run normal air pressure. if you struggle for grip drop a few psi. i got some drag radials coming tommorow or wed. a new TC to be fitted and fuel pump. so hoping to beat my time.

There was only one serous drag car there last time, it was launching very well. Strangely I noticed that Mr Nice was having trouble getting grip at first but I think that was maybe more to do with his set-up. Later in the day he was launching great. I'd never been drag racing before but I had enough confidence in the grip to be able to launch my Blade pretty aggresively.

Are you thinking of coming along then John? You'd be sure to get lots of runs in.

(Just remember to have something with you to pump them back up again!!)

NEVER

just buy a small compressor that plugs in cig lighter. they only £10

Deffo the setup - Mr Nice has Pirelli P0's, same as me. They are shite for drag launches because they have VERY stiff sidewalls. They can't flex and 'wind up' the way fat drag tyres can so they lose traction instead. Combine that with very stiff suspension like wot I have and you get axle tramp (well, a modern variant of it anyway) where the back of the car judders up and down. That's one reason why my drag times at Pod were so rubbish. The terminal speed was there, but the 60ft was dogarse slow.

just got my BFG drag radials today :)

wonder if they will help much. when on cheap khumo rubber on 35psi i have have had a best 60 foot of 2.050 but mainly its 2.1 to 2.3. i have dropped from 33-35psi down to 25psi on normal street tyres (curious) and you sure can tell you have more grip.

on supra forums they say on drag radials start at about 20psi and work down to get best results.

i have seen some fantastic 60 foots as low as 1.4 which is way better than 4wd.

i have had that where back end seems to be jumping up and down. it only happens when you try give it too much revs off the line. jake have you read up on all the free mods you can do, resetting ecu, pulling headlight, just depends how far you want to go. just getting your first time then copairing against others will give you an idea how well you doing.

on auto when you power brake on line you can only go so many revs and wheels start spinning on line. are you auto or manual?

Yeah? That's great 'cos I've got a pair of those already on Std 17s

No I haven't seen these. Got a link?

I'm aware that you can remove the headlight but would that really help at all with the Std airbox?

Are you saying to reset the ECU before racing? Is that a good idea? :conf:

My car's got an Auto trans Mark.

some people reset ecu after every run. i have done it before i start racing. on auto pulling the trac fuse supposed to help, makes more agressive gearchanges but can shorten life of gearbox. it sounds like you have a stock car?

just go along and drive as normal and get a base time to work off in future.

do searches on board for resetting ecu and trac fuse pulling.

Well I don't have Cone/Mushroom air filter if that's what you mean but yes my car is pretty standard, just a double Decat, FCD and Walbro pump. It made 350 HP DIN at Thor before I fitted the Walbro though

Thanks, I'll have a read.
