penguin
hi, i got a new job in september and am just about to reach my 6 month probationary with flying colours - i'm expecting a decent payrise as i was taken on less money due to lack of "experience" in this particular line of work ..... i was having an informal chat with my boss and he's really pleased i'm onboard - he even went a lil sour with me a few weeks ago for an hour or so because he thought i was on the phone talking to an agency so.... today a big spanner has landed in the works - i didnt remove my cv from the websites i stuck it onto - so i get a call from .... **** (they are the paradise of my line of work) ... they package they are offering exceeds ANYTHING i could try and get from my current employer .. it is a permenent role and they would need someone to start by end of march at the latest - they want a face to penguin interview on the 9th of march - thing is i've got shedloads of rollouts in march and i've got my probationary/salary review thing comming up in march too... so.... should i just ditch this place and go with **** - i will end up with a shit/no reference from this place at all OR do i stick around - go for the salary review and see what comes out of it? i'm really in two minds
Havard
You've just got to weigh up both options. Are you going to be able to have your interview with **** before your salary review.?? H.
Ian R
Take a sick day and go for the interview then if you get offered the position consider it then
sdavies
You have to think a little mercenary on times. Would most assuredly at least go for the interview (with whatever excuse you can dream up). This other company may not even like you when they meet you - then there will be no dilemma!! Then if they are indeed interested and really want you on board, well... go for it! Money matters (well up to a certain comfort point - bang for buck - lots of bucks cover a lot of woes ) and if it looks as though you would be happy there that is a bloody huge bonus The place may not be what you think it and you wouldn't want to work there /shrug. toyotasuprauk
You should consider the new place for sure, its not easy but see what they are offering.
hiten55
go for the interview, apart from anything else its good experience. then, if you get the job, make a decision, it'll be easier once you know more about the company to decide between the two. you never know - the new job may not be what your looking for? whatever you do, DONT turn down the interview - agencies probably keep a record of things like that. Sheefa
I took a day's holiday and went for another job mate. Didn't get it because a) I hadn't prepared and b) I got pissed the night before, quite heavily too. That says it all. Deep down I didn't want it as I know this job pays well, but is crap, and I'm leaving the civvie world soon anyway! If I was you, try and get the interview done asap. Has your probation period been signed off yet? If not, you only have to give two weeks notice IIRC?
michael
Probably wise to attend the interview and attempt to secure the job before you start mapping your life out - you may think you are the best thing since sliced bread but the new place might not
turbonut
if you dont at least go for the interview and see what they have to say, you could be forever afterwards thinking 'What if........' Go for it! and Good Luck!
jamesmark
You have to go for the interview, plus your work cannot legally give you a bad reference.
penguin
hehe right then its settled, the guy wanted an up to date cv so i'll send one over to him this weekend. Not a bad idea taking a sickie tho ...i've yet to be signed off on the probationary period here... so may as well go to see if the grass does get greener thanks folks! TLicense
Go to the interview. If you get the job, but are reasonably happy with where you are, approach your boss, tell him you've been offered whatever, but you would rather stay where you are, but would need a better salary/benefit package to keep you. If he tells you no way and gets arsey, then at least you've got the other job in your pocket. If he agrees then it's smiles all round. Best of luck!! Pabs
I think you're in a good or a BETTER place, not rock and hard-place. Either way, you've got ammunition to get more out of your employer now. Go for the interview - if they offer you the job, you can then ask your current boss to match, or lose you. if they don't, then there is still a good chance you'll get a decent payrise etc As mentioned, they can't give you a bad reference, but they can refuse to give a reference at all, which could be seen as bad. Ark
Don't ever take a sickie. Book the time off as holiday - it looks better to your prospective new employer, and the $hit can't hit the fan if you're found out for interviewing...what you do on your own time and all that. Especially as you are still on probation - they can sack you instantly for a fake sickie.
juanchan
Go for the interview - if they offer you the job, you can then ask your current boss to match, or lose you. if they don't, then there is still a good chance you'll get a decent payrise etc I'd agree. A guy at my work got offered a job following an interview at another company. Because my place wanted to keep him so much they not only matched the offer he was considering, they added 2k a year to it. The only thing is it seems to have been a one-off occurance for my place as no-one else is able to push for the raises they want/need. If you go for the interview and get an offer, the ball's in your court mate. Good luck whatever you decide to do!
michael
The only thing is it seems to have been a one-off occurance for my place as no-one else is able to push for the raises they want/need. That's because the other guy has taken the money put aside for the rest of you.
juanchan
That's because the other guy has taken the money put aside for the rest of you. If only! I think it worked out he basically got a 5k pay rise overnight. Definitely wouldn't say no! We've been told not to request any rises before we've been with the company 12 months (and one lad has been cheeky and tried to go for it early and was shot down straight away), and we've essentially already been told not to expect more than a 1k rise no matter how well we argue/prove our cases for more. Chewie
so.... should i just ditch this place and go with **** - i will end up with a shit/no reference from this place at all They can't give you a shit reference and if they did you would have grounds for legal action for libel and best of all have the evidence in writing. Worse case would be no reference but then this would still reflect badly on your present company as the interviewer can approach them for an answer. Again if they say anything bad then it's slander. My company gives references which more or less say ' Joe Bloggs worked here'. These days it's not considered good practice to say this guy is fab and is the best thing since sliced bread and should be El Presidente of UK. If it turns out to be the opposite then the referee gets sued.. Go for it.
penguin
hehe - just done the deed - updated my CV and sent it to the person interviewing me on monday - i just have to find a way of taking march 9th off my current boss is always thinking the worst when people take days off (i.e. looking for another job or gone to an interview)
michael
my current boss is always thinking the worst when people take days off (i.e. looking for another job or gone to an interview) Why ?
