Dragonlady
Ok this is a class example of this governments policy of Tax and then we'll tax you some more. I have to get pet food and medical supplies for my ferrets in from America as my local supplier has stopped selling the products, and there is no-one in the UK currently selling the stuff I need. Any way last night I came home to find a letter from the post office stating the goods had been subject to import tax and vat, and requesting £40 payment to be made before the goods are released. So today I rang up HMRC to see understand why how import tax works and I couldn't believe my ears, what I was told was: All goods that exceed £18 in value are subject to import duty, and the percentage chargeable is dependent upon what the item is for. To wish I answered well what is the charge for Pet supplies - well they replied it depends on what type of animal it is for as there are didn't tax rates for each animal. WTF - is this country barking mad!! But then it got better.... The HMRC guy went on to explain the Duty is then calculated on the Cost of Goods + Freight + Insurance. Then of course you will have to pay VAT which is 17.5% of the Cost of the Goods + Freight + Insurance + IMPORT DUTY. Just another classic example of the Rip Britain off. At least before I used to break even on the cost of buying the goods from America becuase of the Freight Costs but now I will be £40 worse off each time. Sorry just had to do an Ellis rant
Gamer
Taxation is to Brits as apple pie is to Americans. It has been going on for so long here that people just come to accept it without question. Nothing will change that apart from a few good riots and even then they will stick it to you another way. The Gov. will never give up taking free money from you.
Henk
That makes no sense at all! Why the hell do you pay Duty on freight costs and insurance? Surely the duty is on the value of the goods, not the ancilliary costs associated with getting them here! Totally barking!

Supragal
I suppose it must protect UK companies to an extend else we'd all import far cheaper US etc stuff. PITA when it's a product only available in the US. Theres a business opportunity for you anyway.

SUPRASUZUKI
Tell me about it. When I had my bike imported from Florida it cost me $400 to get it packed and shipped from Florida after dropping it off at the warehouse. It then cost me about £250 just to get it off the boat and decrated at Southampton!

Angarak
Im pretty sure Import Duty was an 'EU' idea - as everyone in the EU was buying US goods over the internet for less than they could buy it in their own country. Maybe next time you order from the US, you could first contact the company and ask them if they will mark down the value of the product(s) for £17, or mark them as second hand goods as I think you dont pay import duty on second hand goods (not that I've heard of second hand pet food lol)
