Pete
I guess if eBay gave them access to your account (After all, it is verified to a point) they could us it to bash heavy users.

supragold
A guy at work got busted by the tax man. He was earning as much off e-bay as his wage. They really smacked his arse. Said he must have been earning that for years therefore he owed x amount. Nothing he could do. He would have been better off doing it properly first time. Daston
do you have to pay tax on second hand goods ie private sales?? Because surly the tax man could ask for tax every time you sell a car.

Just when your making a living on it. If you buy and sell a certain amount of cars in a year they class you as a trader and sting you too. markjodrell
A bloke I know got hammered by the tax man. Apparently he had been selling absolutly shit loads of new stuff and had done the 62k (I think its 62k) turnover that makes him eligiable to pay VAT. When your turn over hits that point Ebay have to inform customs and excise.Hence he got a letter from Customs and excise re the VAT followed by one from the Inland Revenue ........GULP

geoffvalenti
Realistically, it all depends on what, and how much stuff you are selling. If like most of us you sell a diverse range of secondhand goods in a fairly limited quantity, then its no problem. (ie your own possessions) However, if you're selling new goods, lots of similar items, and a large quantity of them, then the Inland Revenue would be interested in you. Basically its all about common sense. If its a business and you're making money from it, in the long term it's better to declare your earnings and pay the tax on it. Everything on eBay is documented, so how people think they can escape paying tax, long term, amazes me.
