Which Turbo Timer

Paul, I do not know of any that will interface with the UK spec alarm, it is very old now!

 

I have the HKS Type-1 as I thought the extra features would be nice but, tbh, I do not use them and it is just used as a timer.

 

It works well and does what is says on the tin. I plan to have it incorporated with the Clifford when it’s installed.

 

If you don’t want to drive all that way to Titan you can always get Dusty at MVP to ship it to your hotel, if you give him a bit of notice then he can guarantee which day it will be delivered.

Hmmm tend to generally agree... someone persuade me otherwise? what do they do other than act as a countdown timer?

 

I was always under the impression that they are an essential bit of kit that safeguards the life of the turbos. From what I understand - they give the oil enough time to cool down the bearings (or something) in the turbos.

If they were essential they would be standard!

 

My last car didn't have a TT while friends with the same car did and the turbo's on mine and their's still need to be replace at a similar mileage 72K.

 

As i said waste of money.

I don't agree. Why hang about waiting for your car to cool down when you get somewhere if you don't have to?

When I get home or to work I don't want to sit there in the car for 3 mins (or whatever) waiting to be able to turn the engine off. I want to get where I'm going, jump out, lock the car and go indoors - leaving the timer to turn the engine off when it's ready.

I'm just not strict enough with myself to let it cool down with me there, I'm too impatient.

well maybe.............your evidence based on yours and your mates cars would appear conclusive:innocent:

 

I would however point out that whilst toyota did not 'fit one as standard' its does make specific mention in the uk owners handbook of letting the car idle after hard driving to ensure that the turbo's are not damaged and as far as i'm aware thats what a turbo timer does?

 

BTW Didn't i read on here that it Was / is illegal to leave a car unoccupied and idling? and if so Toyota probably couldn't have risked fitting one as standard could they?

Absolutely! Especially when you've got a kit like a Boost Controller fitted! That's going increase your boost to maybe 1.2 bar (?) - that means more pressure in your turbos ... and alot more heat.

It still is illegal to leave it running unattended on the highway.

 

Of course I only use my timer on my driveway and the car park at work, so that's alright. :D

i had a blitz one with wiring harness but would not work on facelift car so swopped it to dude. if you know you going home last few miles just take it steady then it will give turbos a chance to cool down. or just use remote engine start to keep engine going while you go to your house.

I just allow the car to cool on the last couple of miles unless it's a motor way stop where i let it idle.

 

If you do everthing legally (as we all do of cause :D )and disclose the TT the insurance will go up it you so you may add a couple of miles to the turbo life but you add to the cost of the insurance. So say £80 for a TT £50 extra to the insurance per year + the fuel when idleing (i know the fuel cost is low but it's still a cost) it's a false economy.

 

don't disclose it then the thatcham cert on the alarm is invalid and so is your insurance,

 

IMHO and not mening to be insulting to anyone TT are bought by people who believe all the hipe (spelling) "Emperors new clothes" anyone.
