I'm sure Doug will confirm but, as I understand it, taking the property of someone else without their permission, even if it's just as a joke, is theft. Theft is taking something from someone with the intention of permanently depriving them of it. I'm sure he's planning to give the monkey back at some point as it is only a joke.
