RedM
Nice description here: http://www.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~baba/iaido/index.html That's a good link. It emphasises the true nature of the art and the discipline required.
Guru
I tried Iai and loved it. Just didn't find the time The art is fantastic and very soothing in the right environment. Do you practice Iai Martin? Proper swords cost close to a grand not £30.....

grahamc
I have to agree with Martin on this one... A hand made swords, tends to imply the idea of a folded sword. And I believe that there are only something like 214 people that are "authorised" to make traditional folded swords. Do you not think that it is slightly on the side of irresponsibly to sell a sharpened sword??
tbourner
I always wanted to do Iaido, since I started Ninjutsu, but never found anywhere to do it (and don't have the money/time at the moment). I have a few swords though, a couple of the £150ish ones and one that was £7 off eBay! That one really shows just how bad the quality of them can be!! Daston
how well ballanced is it and how many times has the blade been folded??
ManwithSupra
I think we have established that it is not a proper sword. As for selling it sharpened thats asking for trouble from the start.

Do you practice Iai Martin? I do but right now I'm on a very lengthy break from both Iai and Kendo. I've really knackered my left hip and can't seem to get through the day without doing something to aggrevate it. My doctor has advised some proper, stay at home rest but I can't afford that. Iai and Kendo are just not bearable with the pain and I'd rather not do any permanent damage. This, on top of a very nasty chest infection. I really miss them both. It's amazing how much they help to clear the mind and calm you down. That pursuit of perfection knowing you'll never be good enough is oddly relaxing. Guest Phillw454
ok wellthis thread is full of rubbish!! Ok i know NOTHING about swords ok, its not some 1 off custom made sword and wont cost you over £1000 and i never said it was!! It was sold to me sharp and they are 100% legal to buy and own with out any form of license aslong as you are over the age of 16. These can be bought on any sword website along with Replica and blank firing pistols. Jeez if you aint intrested in buying the things stop going on! i never claimed it was some amazing rare find and i dont want a history of it! I also get to buy expensive carbon bits and pieces, like limbs, riser, arrows, etc... Same idea, the pursuit of perfection, which is un-attainable. suprattgaz
Pet hate of my Sensei - It's not a Samurai sword, it is a Samurai's sword or Katana. He would go ballistic if he read all you lot claiming to know about these and continually calling it a samurai sword. I have a few, not real but the explanation sounds like a half decent blade material (work as aerospace engineer, have played with exotic materials etc quite a bit!) RedM
Ninja's go in levels of 'kyu', from 10th Kyu downwards. Most of the Budo sports have Kyu grades before the Dan grades. Kendo is great for deflating your own ability. Basically, it takes about two years to reach Ikkyu and then you go for Shodan (the first Dan grading). Now IIRC in Karate and the like, a first Dan is seen as "some pretty hot shit" but in Kendo it's like "You are still a beginner. You know nothing, but at least you know you know nothing! "
Steviekid
Now IIRC in Karate and the like, a first Dan is seen as "some pretty hot shit" Not if you join a proper organisation as apposed to some crappy little local club. Most first Dan black belts I've come across are shit with a massive jump in standard to 2nd Dan and so on.

Most first Dan black belts I've come across are shit with a massive jump in standard to 2nd Dan and so on. That's kind of what I was saying. I know that a black belt takes some time to reach in Karate etc and the dan grades are the real measure of how you are doing and so it should be seen as an acheivement. We have no coloured belts in Kendo so Ikkyu is sort of like a black belt but really all it means is that you've reached a point where you are actually serious about continuing. I don't know how it works in Karate et al but, once into the Dan grades, we have grading intervals measured in years and the high grades have to do some serious overseas travelling to get to grading sessions. It's amazing watching the difference in ability between the graded members.
