Vaughany
I have noticed a clicking/ knocking noise coming from my engine bay. It can be heard when the car is in gear but stationary and i turn the steering wheel. On investagation it looks like the top part of the Drive Belt Tensioner is vibrating/moving causing the noise. I have checked the drive belt and that looks in good order and the markings on the drive belt tensioner show that the indication mark falls between the three lines on the tensioner so that seems okay Does anyone have any ideas what needs to be done to rectify this or has anyone experienced this problem before. Do i need to change the drive belt or do I need a new drive belt tensioner? I was going to take the car to Toyota but dont want to be ripped off by them buying loads of bits that I necessarily need. If i am changing the drive belt is it worth changing the tensioner aswell or vice a versa. Cheers
dude
Take off the spark plug cover and top timing cover and make sure the 3 12mm bolts are still done up that hold the tensioner to the block . Dude:flame Dev
Chris Wilson
I am now fitting a rebuilt tensioner on most early MKIV's thast come in for a cambelt, the bearings are commonly rough and noisy. It may need a repair. There are other belt issues that are more unusual, casing vibration and noise, and I can fix those too.
Vaughany
thanks for the info, is the top timing cover easy to get off. I have never done this before so have not looked to see how you remove this. Is it case of just unscrewing bolts etc or is it more complicated than this. thanks again
dude
I would have thought a rattely noise sounds like its come loose but as CW says the bearings do need replacing more and more , this is a relativley easy job , i keep a couple in stock all the time Dude:flame Dev
