Drive Belt Tensioner

I have noticed a clicking/ knocking noise coming from my engine bay. It can be heard when the car is in gear but stationary and i turn the steering wheel. On investagation it looks like the top part of the Drive Belt Tensioner is vibrating/moving causing the noise. I have checked the drive belt and that looks in good order and the markings on the drive belt tensioner show that the indication mark falls between the three lines on the tensioner so that seems okay

Does anyone have any ideas what needs to be done to rectify this or has anyone experienced this problem before. Do i need to change the drive belt or do I need a new drive belt tensioner? I was going to take the car to Toyota but dont want to be ripped off by them buying loads of bits that I necessarily need. If i am changing the drive belt is it worth changing the tensioner aswell or vice a versa.

Cheers

thanks for the info, is the top timing cover easy to get off. I have never done this before so have not looked to see how you remove this. Is it case of just unscrewing bolts etc or is it more complicated than this.

thanks again

I would have thought a rattely noise sounds like its come loose but as CW says the bearings do need replacing more and more , this is a relativley easy job , i keep a couple in stock all the time ;)

First thing to do is remove the belt and spin the tensioner wheel if it sounds at all harsh the bearing is the problem if the body of it rattles around the mounting bolts will need tightening , the top timing cover is held on with 3 allen bolts same size as the spark plug cover .
