RedM Posted February 12, 2007 Share Posted February 12, 2007 With had these on several sliproads near Leeds for months now and this morning the ones near me were finally active. For those that don't know, they allow cars onto the M-way a few at a time to prevent slow down of traffic already on the Mway. Well, for a start, they if you are more than two or three cars back then you won't get through before they change again. Everyone then races to the narrow, far end of the filter lane and fight to all got on in the same 20 metre section. Except me, I jumped on at the earliest chance and passed the other cars in my 'batch' before they'd even got on the Mway. TBH, it dodn't seem to make too much difference to the flow. michael Posted February 12, 2007 Share Posted February 12, 2007 Do they only switch them on when the Motorway traffic is at a crawl anyway? I worry that silly people who struggle to merge in safely at ~70 will attempt to pull on at 30 and cause carnage. I wonder how long it will be before the lights cause it to backup onto the roundabout above which in turn prevents people getting off the motorway safely? The junction where the M62 and M1 meet already has this and traffic lights seem unable to cope, it ends up effectively reducing the M62 to 2 lanes, 1 of which is full of slow moving BMW drivers looking for a 12" gap to swerve into in order to save valuable seconds in the queue. They prevent too many vehicles entering the freeway and keep traffic moving albeit at a much slower than normal freeway speed. Again the same system is in use.. green for a couple of cars, then red. tbourner Posted February 12, 2007 Share Posted February 12, 2007 Why do we need lights on roundabouts though? Isn't that a ring-road? I'm going to set up a vigilante group to plant small explosives on all the roundabout light control boxes in the country - and blow them one night.
