Paul Booth
I know Ash believes that the extra power(?) in the UK car comes from the cams but it just occurs to me, what is the *true* bhp difference between a j-spec and a uk-spec vehicle? To summarise what I understand are the key differences: 1. Turbos 2. Injectors 3. Cams 4. Diff (including personal oil cooler) 5. Suspension settings 6. Turbo cooling 7. Brakes 8. Fuel pump What else is there? I'm going to keep a binary copy of the final list. I am ignoring the ICE, headlight cleaners & construction, fuel tank, etc. as being basically irrelevent to performance.
Doughie
Yo Paul I *believe* that, as a default, the Jap-spec ignition timing is advanced relative to the UK-spec. (presumably cos of the higher octane fuel in Japan). Obviously if the engine detects knock, then it retards the timing.
Paul Booth
So, the question becomes: 'which ECUs affecting performance are different and in what way?'. Anyone?

Paul Booth
You've not been reading this thread, have you Gavin? Diff oil cooler and fue pump were in the list at the start. I forgot camshafts. Does anyone know both the j-spec and uk-spec camshaft specs?
GavinL
oop's that's why I failed all my exams at school...never read the question properly! Cams are 236 and 256 as I recall

GavinL
J-spec both in/out at 236 uK both in/out at 256 If your counting traction control as part of the performance package it not the same between the two
Paul Booth
OK, so far: 1. Turbos 2. Injectors 3. Cams (j-spec 236; uk-spec 256) 4. Diff (including personal oil cooler) 5. Suspension settings 6. Turbo cooling 7. Brakes 8. Fuel pump Should I include the slip control as it seems to be an annoyance anyway? Guest Ash
Cam specs: Jap intake lift: 7.8 mm ... UK 8.25 mm. Jap exhaust lift: 8.4 mm ... UK 8.4 mm. Valve timing: Jap intake opening: 3 degs BTDC - closing 41 degs ABDC ... UK 3 degs BTDC - 50 degs ABDC. Jap exhaust opening: 52 degs BBDC - closing 4 degs ATDC ... UK same as Jap spec. Guest Ash
Also, the UK car has an oil-to-air transmission cooler on the auto in addition to the oil to water unit present on the Jap and UK cars. Yours, J
Paul Booth
As in what I understand by an oil cooler? I won't stop worrying until I've fitted one, or are they overkill in the UK climate?

Not sure whether the transmission oil cooler would directly affect performance, more a case of how long you can do it for.
