Steve Cargill
It's the oild cooler for the rear diff. I think there is a common problem with those leaking, try a search. Have you just cleaned around that area at all? Jetwash/ brushing? I suggest that you don't drive it until it's fixed or someone who knows says it is safe to drive. ChrisB
was hoping somone would say its nothing, not cleaned it with jetwash or brush always just use hose pipe
Sharpie
mine started to leak a little so, got it changed at Toyo ~£140 I *think* ?? I have only ever seen people go with a stock replacement on here. How bad is it leaking ? AND does it crumble to the touch, I bet it does Just old age. HTH Oh, see here http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8316& and here http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20330&highlight=diff+oil+cooler
michael
Yeah it's the diff cooler rad - I'm currently running without one and just have a loop of copper pipe in there at present. I'm planning to fit a Mocal or similar aftermarket item at some point but I keep forgetting to buy one - they work out at under £50 and will just need brackets fabricating, much easier to accept than the near £150 Toyota ask for an inferior version that appears to rot away. You can get suitable coolers on eBay for £25 if you so desire, you just might need to buy hose connectors to make it fit.
ChrisB
the fins dont look bad condition they look brand new in fact never thought to stick my hand in and see if they were rotton, will take it off in the mornign and have a loo, do you get at it from the wheel arch or by taking the skirt off? Cheers for the help so far
michael
Chris, the fins on mine looked 'OK' considering their age, the leak came from a couple of places on the metal pipes attached to the cooler - one seems to have developed a hole and the other has just fallen off near the end. I've just been out and taken a few pics for you - click here - yours might not have failed the same but that hole is bizarre!
Paul
Mcanny, Mine looked EXACTLY like the 'holed' pipe, didn't have the end break off on the other though. Mine had a smaller hole although the corrosion was the same, it was situated at the top of the rubber hose. All I did was put a new bit of longer hose and used a jubilee clip rather than the crap Toyota job and it's been OK for the last couple of years. Wouldn't mind replacing it if I'm only lookin at £50 or so. Where do I get a Mocal one from and what dimension/spec am I looking at? I can get the pipework and mounting brackets sort via work so just need a basic unit. Thanks, Paul.
ChrisB
Cheers for the pics mcanny took mine off this mornign and its a tiny pin hole that seems to be the problem but looks like its been coming out for quite a whil;e its was filthy in there, might have to just bypass it for the mo, but as paul said where do you get these mocal ones from? much nicer than toymotor's price and doesnt gewarbox oil smell minging
SimonB
You could try this place for Mocal stuff: www.thinkauto.com I've not used them or anything, just came across them the other day when I was looking at hoses etc.
Sharpie
I have *read* that the UK has a pump to move the Diff oil around so, would you have to be careful in selecting the right size/design of aftermarket cooler ? and could this affect the flow & pump efficiency ? Just curious
ChrisB
ill be interested to know this also, will be ordering a new one on monday, so am i fine in getting a nice universal shiney one, or do i have to pay toymotor?
michael
The pump on the UK's only works when the fluid reaches a certain temp doesn't it? I can't see any reason why an alternative to the standard one will make a difference anyway, you can get them in very similar sizes and spec them based on how much fluid they hold so you can probably get the same sort of setup anyway. I was looking at the 115mm Mocal (or similar) in a 7 or 10 row.
ChrisB
Ive fitted a new cooler in place of the toyota one is there anything i should do to repressuirize it, or will it just put the fluid through it when it needs too? will post pictures of the new one, when i get them off my camera
